I’ve always run def from a pump at a near by truck station in my previous trucks but with emissions stuff being so finicky I am wondering if I’m best served running a different type of def or if it really matters at all?

DEF is DEF so long as it is made to the ISO 22241 standard. So brand is not important.

What is important is storage/shelf life. In theory a well frequented truck stop is going to have a higher turnover and fresh DEF topping their tanks.

To me, it is a flip of a coin as to what is more convenient getting DEF from a store like Walmart and keeping an eye on dates vs. getting it at the truck stop.

Either will be fine as long as you’re using pump DEF from a place with constant use. Either one you use, make sure everything is clean - no dry flakes going on the tank

DEF is made for most companies by a place in Reno Nevada called Highline Aftermarket. They box it for multiple places. Doesn't matter where you get it. O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, Walmart it's all the same. As far as pump DEF goes. Not a clue.
They also make most brands of washer fluid too for most companies.

Just curious, does the formulation of def at the pump change like gas and diesel depending on the climate?

I agree with the importance of storage/ shelf life.

DEF quality will be impacted if stored /displayed outdoors for extended periods without being covered. Seen it plenty of times out here in socal.

Also want to make sure its fresh not 1 year old DEF thats been sitting in direct sunlight.

I wonder if you could piss into a Berkey filter add some distilled water to it and make that work?

Truck stop DEF: Dirt cheap. Have no idea where it came from, how long it's been there, or what's in it.

Box DEF from a store: Twice the cost. Know exactly where it came from, how long it's been there, and exactly what specs it meets.

I'll mention that on the Ram forum, a member claims he's been experimenting with DEF brands in boxes. He fills every 10k and inspects his DEF injector. With the $7/box cheap DEF he sees crystalization and buildup on the injector and other places. With the $18/box Blue Platinum DEF he does not see any buildup or crystalizing and it seems to keep the system cleaner. Just thought I'd throw that out there....

Won't change. There are no summer or winter blends if thats what you were getting at.

Concentration should be 32.5 or as close to that as possible to maintain the DEF freezing temp of 12 degrees Fahrenheit.

There should be coolant that flows through a coil within your DEF tank which helps with freezing of DEF being that a large portion of DEF is deionized water.
