Built not bought or bought not built???

Just a random thought/conversation piece.

So, I saw a post where people were debating bought not built or built not bought. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s all about what the person feels it is. But I’m trying to figure out why this is such a big issue with some folks.

I built another trailer for myself. I already have 3 and a boat but I wanted another long trailer for the ATVs and the lawnmowers That way I wouldn’t always have to load up the big trailer. I bought the trailer from marketplace, bought all of the parts, and after some welding, cutting, and drilling, I have another trailer. Only thing left is the second axle. So, is That bought not built or built not bought. I mean… I had to buy the trailer and the parts.

Same thing for my jeep. It’s not stock. I installed and performed about 70% of the work done to it and a shop performed the rest. But still, everything on it had to be bought first.

So I guess my question is, what is built not bought or bought not built? And another question would be is why is it such a big deal with some people? I feel like it’s all bought and built.

Just my opinion!

Mine is both.

Previous owner did the winch, bumper, sliders, pre runner lights, backup lights, tonneau, Sunrider. All of these things I'd have done if they weren't there already.

I did the bed molle panels, sunrider shade, F55 Ultrahook, Yeti adjustable track bar, drag links, LCA and Falcon Nexus 2.1 stabilizer, dead pedal, Tazer, Seat Jackers and console safe. All bolt ons. I'll eventually add some ditch pods, bumper aux lights and if I get a deal on it a SmartCap.

The only bought not built ones I'm critical of are the SoFloJeeps style goofball rides and the way overpriced dealer Black Widow packages. And Grumpers. I hate Grumpers.

Bought not built to me means I bought it from one of the dealers or shops with all the mods installed for me and didn't research and understand what I'm buying and why. Typically these jeeps are using cheap parts to achieve a specific look instead of performance and capability. Often these jeeps are also the reason why people say jeeps ride rough, drive badly, wander everywhere etc because the goal of these shops was profit above all else.

I say you built that stuff. Because you didn’t pay someone to do the work for you. That’s always been my impression of the saying. I’ve of course purchased the vast majority of the parts that have been on mine, but have installed and setup 95% of it myself. I’ve only fabricated a handful of things for it, but I still would say I built mine.

The only issue i can see with someone buying something like an AEV wrangler off the lot or getting one with all the aftermarket parts bolted on already as a first time off roader they mis out on the fun of learning to get yourself through trails not just steering as the vehicle does it. The majority of jeeps out there and lifted trucks for that matter are after the look over the trail prowess and that is great if it makes them happy. It should not matter to anyone else what someone wants out of their build if they like what they end up with, buy the parts and bolt them on, have it built from off the shelf or custom made parts or fabricate the majority of it themselves it is all good. The only downside in my opinion with buying it all built is it may leave the owner short of the learning to drive off road in a basic vehicle experience that helps on tougher terrain and it may not provide the same connection to the vehicle and knowledge of how to repair things as buying parts and bolting them on or fabricating and modifying.

Personally unless I knew it was built professionally, or by someone competent, I'd rather buy it stock, and then have it professionally built. It's hard to know when looking at a random build for sale if it was done well, or if it was done under the shade tree at Fred and Methel's.

Uh oh! You brought SoFlo into the conversation. I've never been a fan of their builds. But... LIke you, I've never been a fan of dealer builds anyway. When I had my past RAM, I saw a Black Widow RAM at a dealership and thought about trading. But when I saw the price tag and saw what it comes with, I was like Nah.... I'm good. They can keep it.

Oh yea... Grumpers are a waste of money. Just my opinion.

I guess being i start building my own toys as a kid because I didn't have the money to pay someone else to do it. I got used to it and at 71 I still do it but for different reasons now. I like to see and feel the effects of each change. I never cared for people who have to tell ya what you want or how smart they are. I’d rather learn by experience

built , bought, it really doesn't matter. Spent the weekend installing a triangulated 4 link on a Jeep J10. No one make a kit. folks make parts.... gather the right parts and do some math and a great looing long arm 4 link is born.

Building you stuff give you a great sense of accomplishment and helps you learn about your rig. Doesn't matter if it is a kit or a collection of parts. Go turn wrenches you will be better for it.
