I want to do Wheeler Pass one of these days so I thought maybe you were up there. Snow probably doesn’t stay there this long
I've done sections of Wheeler Pass quite a few times (one of my favorite runs) and I've gone way past Wheeler Well to go camping, just never made it all the way to the other side of the mountain to Cold Springs. It's a really cool run and some very pretty country up there. Snow is currently all but gone from the Mount Charleston peak (I can actually see it from my bedroom window), it's usually all gone by the end of May. If you want some insight I can help you there.

The Snowy Mountain Range in WY has snow drifts that never melt and it snows every month of the year. My buddy (a local) told me he has camped there in August and has woken up to frozen water bottles that he left on a table outside his tent. Low oxygen make it challenging to even start a fire with good dry wood.

Alrighty, I have returned from The Big Trips 2026. Hope, AK and Palmer Creek Road for the first week, and then Hatcher Pass, Talkeetna, Denali State Park, Denali National Park and Denali Highway from Cantwell, AK to Paxson, AK on the second.

I will be posting the story, plus the photos from each section outside of this forum, mostly because I have a metric crapload of pictures and I dont want to tie up everyone else's posts. I'll be attaching them all to my Build Link.

Long story short: I didn't die. There was a cliff and rope. Gravity did not win. I am not broken. I still have my hat.

Also: There is a prairie chicken of some sort at Teklanika Campground in Denali NP. Would not go away.

Also: Bears!

See you all soon.

My son is going to Ft. Polk this weekend for a month of training and will be out in the woods most of that time. I told him you have no idea of how hot and humid it can be until you’ve spent time in LA!
No doubt! Did five rotations to Ft Polk back in the 90s. The mosquitos were wild, they are like small attack helicopters.

And thats why I moved out of Louisiana and up to Alaska. And bought a small torch (read: flamethrower) for the mosquitos.
