What about Travelers' Information Station, TIS, also called Highway Advisory Radio?
What about it? Never used them before.

So as the radio can technically work without the need for the long whiplike antenna, and I saw the damage from one going through a carwash (another thread), I decided to go with a short one.

But a generic small antenna is boring. I came across this, and really like it!

Yes, that is a Destroyer Grey JT

Let’s see some other interesting-looking antennas.
Maybe its the brand, cant remember the one I had but the signal was atrocious. I ended up sending it back

I miss the telescoping chrome ones. Enterprising juvenile delinquents would snap them off a fender and use the largest diameter section as a barrel along with a .22lr round, a nail and a rubber band to fashion a zip gun.
Or so I was told...?

Amazon all black, couple inches shorter than factory. I do not understand the shorty antenna thing.

My experience has been:

- Shorter antennas will not pick up AM/FM stations as well, which makes perfect sense if you're a FCC-licensed HAM like me and you had to study the nauseating manual about wavelengths, etc.

- Short, stubby antennas tend to be more durable in the mast BUT they're often plastic in the base which allows them to snap off more easily. And trust me, when it snaps and all that's left is the little stud sticking out of your antenna mount it's a PITA to remove.

The OE antenna is by far the most durable and has the best reception. So if you never listen to terrestrial radio, just remove it altogether.
Yes, everything you said. I tried the stubby but reception was so awful I sent it back. I never got around to putting the factory one back on. lol. I never use the radio as I prefer my Pandora and XM. People ask if someone stole it because its missing. I smile and tell them its on my kitchen table, has been for months.

Seriously?
You’ve never used the radio to listen to road conditions, especially over the passes? You’re missing out.

Meh.
It's so much simpler to turn on the radio than to screw around with the phone. And the radio will work (within TIS parameters,) whereas the phone may not (no signal.)

Been asked but haven't seen an answer...

Anybody know the female base mount thread size.... or the male antenna screw size ? I'm looking for an adapter but most are the smaller 4/5mm... the Gladiators looks more like a 7/8mm , can anyone confirm ?
