So, quick update… she has been at the dealership for 7 days now, they finally have a diagnosis… they are saying it is a knock sensor that is downstream of the DEF tank? No idea what that means but will get more info on it tomorrow. Also got the lovely news that it will be 7 to 10 days for delivery of a new sensor. I’ve never been more disappointed or disheartened by a dealership’s complete lack of energy. Terrible experience with this dealership all around.

I had a Range Rover Sport diesel that was a phenomenal vehicle, but it contracted the deadly incorrect DEF disease. First time, dealer replaced a NOx sensor, worked for about six months. Came back, Range Rover engineering said it was a bad cat converter, replaced. About a year later, came back, said there was a leak in the exhaust system, replaced that. It was all under warranty, but probably $8k worth of repairs in two years.

But for those who ask why diesel. The powerful 5,500 pound Range Rover Sport diesel got 30 MPG mixed driving, and could go over 650 miles between fill ups. I miss it, but will never go back.

I think what has the OP really ticked off is that EPA made the failure a falsely catastrophic one. The engine will run perfectly fine with a failed DEF system (or with no DEF in the tank) but the EPA realized people would do exactly that: run it with no DEF or not get the system fixed. So they required it be a catastrophic "engine will not start in XX miles" failure when it really isn't one. Failures happen. I can live with that. But the government turning it into a major problem that may unnecessarily strand me in the middle of nowhere or far from home really ticks me off royally, especially with the required repair parts always on backorder for weeks. I have a Ram with the Cummins and this is always in the back of my mind when I go on long trips. I love diesels and I have no major gripes about emission controls, except for BS like this.

Also, I am on the edge of my chair waiting to hear what the fix was for the high pressure fuel pump on the EcoDiesel. There have been posts here about the fix being made, but no details. That is #1 on my list of "strand me on the middle of nowhere" issues with the Rubicon diesel. #2 is failures of the emission controls. I sure did like test driving one, though, and it is still on my mind.

Sounds like it's time for a different dealership.

Wow, don't they know these are to be trucked, not towed? 4 wheels on the ground or 4 off the ground, but not 2 and 2.

Never lift just one end and tow it.
On a trailer or fully on a truck is the best.
Flat tow is fine IF you follow their instructions and tow in a forward direction, not backwards.
But either front wheels on the ground OR rear wheels on the ground with the other end up - no.

And then you're going to delete a whole system because of one failure? Seriously? It fails once, bad experience and you're going to rip it apart.
Why not fix it and move on?
So if the transmission fails next - rip it out, too?
The chances of it going goofy twice is not great at all - so I suspect there's something else on your mind here to go all extreme on one single failure - which can be resolved.

Waiting to see what gets ripped out when something else fails.........................

Mine has failed 3 times now......is it ok to consider "ripping it out"

Getting it chipped and deleted is 100% NOT environmentally friendly
Is def manufacture, and single use disposable container manufacture environmentally friendly?
How about the waste from all those single use def containers? 100% environmentally friendly?
How environmental friendly is the def, egr, and dpf equipment manufacture?
Is the significantly reduced fuel mileage 100% environmentally friendly?
Or the the shortened engine life?

Not to mention injecting diesel (burning fuel which doesn’t move the truck) directly into the exhaust until it reaches 1000+ F for several minutes belching god-knows-what into the atmosphere emptying the DPF….
