I know, trivial, but i cant get a straight reading on the damm dipstick. Heres what i get no matter which way i put it into the tube, the "gauged" side shows low but the backside shows high or normal. I guess use the backside and ignore the hashmarked side? PIA

First, remove the dipstick and clean off the 'bullet' on the end with brake parts cleaner or lacquer thinner & let dry. Next, fully insert & remove the dipstick. When you remove the dipstick, make sure you always hold it in roughly the same orientation that it was removed, or at least with the bullet end pointing down. Otherwise you can get a false reading. Using an LED light also helps you see the oil level. Read to the lowest indicated level.

One more thing - if you try to get multiple dipstick readings in succession, the inside of the tube will get coated with oil and give you a false reading. In that case, pull the dipstick and wait 10-15 minutes before re-inserting to get a reading.

I agree that this style of dipstick is a PITA to read.

If you have oil on the end of the dip stick. You're good to go.......................as someone once told me.

i know how to read a dam dipstick, wipe, blah. I usually wipe nite before and insert, next morning pull it for a settled out read. Its always high on the backside of the stick but the hashmark side shows a little low. im just gonna use the back screw it

It's going in at an angle. So read it halfway between the high side and low side.

I hate that piece of crap dip stick too. This is what happens when too many parts are sourced from other countries.

That’s how my son gauges the oil level on his old 4.0 Cherokee.

My brother had a '77 Ford F150 with the POS 360 motor in it. He never checked the oil in it. When the valves would start to rattle. He would put 6qts of cheap oil in to it.

Wait till you trying to check it with fresh oil 😂. Scrubbing the head with some scotch pad really helped for me.

He bought that truck new. Think it was in the scrap yard in 1983. It was a rust bucket. I had to use fiberglass to keep the front inner fenders together.
