Well, no you don't HAVE to re-gear when adding 37" tires to a 3.6 automatic JT, but you will want to. After 3.5 years on 35" Toyo AT IIIs, I switched to 37" Yokahama Geolander ATXs when Walmart forced me to with an unbelievably great deal. The 4:10 gear-ratio Jeep Mojave looks great and drives great on the 37s, but there is a noticeable lack of pep in the step now. The JT is a bit more sluggish off the start. I love the new stance and added clearance but will definitely be re-gearing to 4:88 to recover the lost pop and turn those larger tires.
If you don't your automatic transmission will continually shift between 7th and 8th gear. If it gets into 8th at all. 4.88 will take some of your top end speed away, but will improve take off. If your off roading a lot the it is a must.

I must be the odd ball. I swapped out to 37s a few months ago and didn't regear. Still running the 3.73s. Read a lot about the 7th gear 8th gear concerns but don't notice much, if any, difference from my 35s. Took a long 1700 mile road trip from Nebraska to San Diego and back in May and really didn't notice any performance degradations at all. Ran great. Maybe I'm just used to it. But as mine is my DD I don't plan on regearing anytime soon, if at all.

Good in the mud?? How many miles do you have on them? And how many do you think you’ll get out of em?
They're not mud tires but they are as good as if not better than KO2s. I've got about 15k miles on them now, and its barely noticeable. I do have 5 and I do a 5 tire rotation at every oil change. I'd expect to get another 30-40k out of them. They are wearing like a standard AT tire. To me the best part is the price, and that they are stupid quiet on the road.

Do you ever get in to 7th or 8th gear? You said 37s are like your 35s, but if it's like mine with 35s and 3.73, it doesn't get to 7th or 8th gear often enough.

If mine was my DD, I would've regeared by now.

I believe I get into 7th without issue. But my commute is relatively flat and only takes about 25 minutes each way. After I did the switch, I manually shifted into 8th, just to see if there's much of a difference, but don't anymore. I think it dropped my rpm 200 or 300. Not enough to bother. I did adjust my true tire height with Jscan and it's pretty accurate using my GPS app.
On the trip to San Diego my fuel mileage average said 17 mpg. On the way back against stupid head and side winds all the way, it read 14 mpg.
Not bad considering I'm driving a lifted box-shaped truck, IMO

How slow do you drive that you don't see 7th on 35s? Everytime I read these comments i wonder how people are driving uphill everywhere they go? Sure on the freeway the JT is mostly in 7th at 80mph with 37s and 4.10s. Yes it will downshift into 6th or even 5th if the uphill is steep enough. Downhill it's in 8th. Even if you live in the mountains half your driving should be downhill. How could you not see 7th or 8th? On long downhill grades like the grapevine, it will cruise along in 8th at 85mph and 2k rpms for 20-30 minutes straight. No it won't push through headwinds or climb hills in 8th, but a stock charger or JL won't either. That's the intended behavior of a double overdrive transmission in my opinion.

75 MPH and it's usually pretty flat. It will see 7th, but it usually doesn't stay there long. Only time it sees 8th is downhill.

Gears are a touchy subject. I think what your doing with your jeep will decide that for you. We have people running faster speeds with the mojave, people crawling with rubicons, and people mall crawling. The cost of getting Gears done is not a small bill for something not easily changed back. Definitely have to ask yourself what you really plan on doing with your jeep. I went with 5.38s with 38in tires, some days I wished I went with 5.13s but I rarely drive my rig over 65mph. My next set of tires will be 40s. I was looking for more crawling performance and for what I do with my rig I am more that happy with my choice.

Everyone here has good points with data behind it but at the end of the day it's your money and your ride.
I also have 5.38’s and 37’s. Never once have I ever wished I had gone with less gears. I have driven across South Dakota where the posted speed limit is 80mph and kept my cruise at 85-88mph for 7 hours straight driving with 2 fingers on the wheel @ 2750 rpm’s. I’ve been super happy with the performance on and off road. Everyone’s experiences and preferences are going to be unique, which is why there’s so many opinions on the subject.

100% I had 38s on 4.10s for awhile and after I switched way better off road and putting around town. I have a rubicon and even with the transfer case and 4.10s it was EH on the rocks.

Did the 37" xt spare fit in the spare tire carrier location? any mod to get it to fit?

My last gladiator had 35s with 3.73 gears and were I live is mostly flat and cruising at 75mph on the freeway it pretty much stayed in 6th gear and very rarely went into 7th unless I was going downhill but when go back to 6th gear at the bottom. It would never go into 8th gear.

Do you have the current gear indicator enabled on or are you guessing it is going to 7th because it is driving fine. I would venture to guess that it is not going into 7th as often as you think it is.

Thanks. I don't have enabled but will go out and do so now. I'll check tomorrow on my commute to and from work. But, to be honest, it doesn't matter if it's 6th or 7th. It drives great for me and have no complaints.
