Is it possible to disable tailgate lock/unlock from automatic system and use key only ? Hard tonneau cover is easily compromised now...cut top/unlock.

...and yes, I already know the cover can be pried open by a determined thief. I'm trying to deter the honest thief....HaHa.....but seriously, is it easily done ?

If that's what you want to do, remove the access panel on the tailgate and unplug the electrical connection to the locking mechanism.

Don’t mind me. I just think this thread is hilarious coming from a Tacoma with no automatic factory lock and people on their site always looking to install a fix… ?

If it's that bloody easy then I will certainly do. Much appreciated.

Ok I'm confused. If the tailgait automatically locks, how is your hard tonneau compromised. That makes zero sense.

Do old school and install a old barrel lock from the hardware store on the tailgate.

I'm guessing, from interpreting the post, that he regularly leaves the truck unlocked, but would like to keep the tailgate locked since the cover lock relies on that to be effective.

When I hit the unlock button on fob it only unlocks drivers door. If I hit it twice..it unlocks all doors and tailgate. Maybe try that…??? Can’t remember if I changed any settings or it did that when I bought it ??

That's default behavior. Proximity locks are the same. Touch the passenger handle and everything unlocks, touch the driver handle and only the driver door unlocks.

Do what I do, remove the doors, lol. I laugh at the irony that being a soft top owner my gear in the bed is most secure when the doors are off since nobody can get to the button to unlock since it isn't there.

Digging up this old thread as I couldn't find any other answers.

I keep some things under a tonneau cover I need to make sure stay as secure as possible. I'm thinking of running without a top or partial soft top with doors on. The only solution I'm seeing mentioned is to disconnect the plug going to the tailgate lock. Has anyone used any other options? I was thinking maybe wiring a switch going to a hidden location so I don't have to keep plugging and unplugging at the tailgate.

Seems to be the only answer. Then you'll have to use the key to unlock the tailgate.

And tape up those connections after putting dielectric grease on them.

I would avoid adding anything to the circuit as it's CANBUS controlled. Unplugging is one thing, but a switch can potentially short leading to bigger headaches later. I considered suggesting that but then I remembered the CANBUS controls EVERYTHING on these trucks. Even lightbulb upgrades are annoying due to this.
