They could put the two of us in a room together and we’d have a blast talking about car stuff. Everyone else would probably go insane.
I prefer a campfire and a cold one. ?

I know the sticker in the door jamb is king, However, we are driving the most modified vehicles on the planet so, hypothetically, if one was to upgrade to eight-lug one ton axles and brakes and install an aftermarket lift with spring rates capable of handling additional weight where does exceeding GVWR cause a problem, frame degradation?
Let's keep John Law out of it, just concentrating on the vehicle for now.

I'm thinking yes, the frame is the limiting factor. A good example is this recent thread: https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/broken-frame.91838/

Center of gravity, body roll, oversteer/understeer, steering in emergency and more.

COG-Check. Wider tires and offset wheels.
Body roll-check. Rocksport Black shocks turned up while loaded and traveling.
I will scale it before our next trip and post weight but I know it is a heavy girl. As far as steering and emergency maneuvering I know what this vehicle is and what it will and won't do and I drive it as such. I do not drive it like my Corvette. I drive it more like the Cummins camper truck pulling the enclosed trailer,

I feel better now.

Tree farmer now. Retired first responder.
Bottom line is that most and close to all of the overlander JTs, Tacoma's, etc. are way overloaded. That is based on GVWR from the manufacturer.
They put Ford F250 and F350 Super Duty weight on 1/2 ton 'mini' trucks.

Bent frames happen these days and I only blame the manufacturers for under building the frames.

GVWR carries penalties in the gov reg world and so there we go.

Take it out to an empty huge parking lot and run through some tight steering and braking and get used to it - at least that's my opinion. I found my F250 handled totally differently when I was in a tight turn and needed braking, and when a deer popped out in front of me I assumed the brakes, being extremely heavy duty even for that truck, would be fine but the danged thing drifted really badly under heavy braking, the rear swung right around to the left every time. Holy crap!
Larger diameter tires and more weight means your stopping distance will grow......... but if you keep distances and account for that, it goes a long ways.

I learned a long time ago that you brake hard for deer, but never swerve. For an insurance stand point, your better off hitting the deer than swerving and hitting the ditch. Always, I mean always say you hit the deer. Followed by I think I saw it get up and run off.
I was even told such by an insurance agent.

@ShadowsPapa my old solid front axle leaf sprung Toyota would do that. Found the bushings in the front torque arm were getting sloppy. Replaced and then it would stop just about straight as an arrow.
But to your point, its a great idea to find a safe place and do some emergency maneuvers. Best/safe way to get to know a new vehicle. I've done it many time. Including in the first snow after a new purchase.

Iowa DNR says - hit 'em, never steer or swerve. Brake - but not so much you lose control. Most injuries and deaths are caused by trying to miss the deer. and here - they grow tall and heavy (maybe it's all that corn?)

Then you have sausage meat to commiserate with while the insurance work goes through. It's pre-tenderized at that point.
