If you think you can successfully get your money back using the Lemon Laws, then you should pursue that route. Just be sure to buy the replacement vehicle in California, or you may run into the exact same problem with the next one.

I am curious as to how you managed to purchase a 2020 model with 17k miles that had never been registered.

I purchased the vehicle brand new in Hawaii from a jeep dealership and owned it from mile 0. It has currently 17k miles on it. Hawaii does not have SMOG, so the problem could have been there from purchase. I just moved to California and because it is a new vehicle in the state I am required to SMOG it to register it in California. The Emissions are under warranty and California compliant so it should be able to pass if they are working correctly. That is the main issue. I cannot get the EGR monitor to go ready to pass SMOG to register it. It was originally registered in Hawaii and still is.

Found this on the JL side, for someone with the exact same issue. Worth a shot!

"Root cause found, loose wire are the ECU plug causing intermittent sensor readings, not engough to trigger a CEL but enough to stop the monitors running. Think it happened when installing the PSC steering box and had to move the ECU a bit to get access."

See that is exactly what I mean. Jeep could at least take it in and check the basic stuff, but they refuse and tell you to drive it to kick the can down the road. I have had the TSB to replace my steering gear box with the cast iron black one, so maybe this could be something I have them check as well when I take it in.

That's because a lot of dealerships kind of suck. I have two locally. I go to the one farther away for maintenance, because it has a better service department. I buy from the closer one, because I like the sales department, but I really don't care for their service department at all.

Some free advice which you're free to ignore. There's nothing wrong with your car, it's not broken, it's not a lemon. It just needs to hit some specific self-test targets, which it hasn't managed to get yet since the ECU lost voltage and reset. It's rare that you don't trigger them all in normal use, but it can happen.

Understood the frustration is that these aren't visible to the driver. Fix that first, with a ~$30 bluetooth OBD2 reader. This will tell you exactly which cycles are ready, which ones you still need to trigger, and when it's done and ready to test. That will clear up all the mystery around this and put it back in your control.

FWIW if your registration fees are all paid basically no one will care that the smog check has prevented getting a sticker. I used to have an M3 with smog trouble (also in CA), got stopped one time for the plate sticker being more than a year out of date, and after hearing the story the cop basically apologized for stopping me. All they care about are that the reg fees are paid.

You sound just like the dealer who cannot tell me what those "self test targets" are....update....2 dealers by the way so far looking at it. I dropped it off to the chrysler dealer in Hemet today to have them try their hand at it. I don't think anyone here reads the whole thread before replying.....I am still running Hawaii plates because I am NOT registered in California yet due to I cannot pass SMOG. California will only issue me a one time 60 day extension once you have paid registration fees but will not issue the plates. After that 60 day extension, I am driving illegally. That is the entire point of this. If I cannot register the vehicle then I cannot get plates and drive the vehicle where I am living and Jeep needs to make that right. I also have a nice 120 dollar OBDII scanner, but it does not tell me what the wickets are that are needed, it only tells me whether the monitor is OK, being ready, or Incomplete being that the PCM has not ran the test. I understand fully and know what monitor I need to get ready, that is not the issue here and no mystery. It is my EGR monitor and definitely not in my control by any means and not the dealers evidently either. If the issue is serious enough to impair my use of the vehicle it applies under the lemon law...hence, a lemon.

I recently went through the same issue with EGR not being completed. I couldn’t pass the smog test to register in CA. After some research I came across a video on YouTube that showed the steps necessary to complete a cycle. I followed it and was able to have the cycle completed and passed smog. Here are the steps I followe:

1. TurnEd on the truck, set AC to max and turned on the rear defroster for about 3-5 minutes.

2 immediately after I went on the freeway, using the throttle half way, drove to 55mph and kept that speed for about 3-5 minutes. Then let off gas and let the vehicle slow down on its own to 20 mph.

3. Using 3/4 of the throttle sped back up to 55 mph and again kept it there for about 3-5 mins. Them let off gas and let it coast down to 20 mph.

I made sure that I did not brake or downshift to slow the car down. It should coast down on its own.

I also made sure there wasn’t any traffic around me when I did this. It was very late at night.

I used Jscan to monitor the EGR, and after the 1st try, I was able to see that EGR was completed. However this might take several tries.

disclaimer, if you are going to try this, please use caution as you slow down on any stretch of highway as this can be dangerous. So do this at your risk.

here is the link to the video
How to complete EGR cycle.

I have tried that drive cycle from the guys youtube video.. but, that is at least promising that someone has said I did X and X worked. I will put a thumbtack in that for later. The dealer when I droped it off believes the test of the EGR may not be running on mine due to rpm....I have tried It with a tazer and tire size programmed and without the tazer. I have 35 inch tires on mine but I think it could be another issue preventing it from running. We will see. I will keep everyone posted what the dealer comes up with and if he says ok just drive it now I will do the drive cycle above that worked for someone 20 times before bringing it back to the dealer.

I found an article online that states the EGR monitor may not run for a number of engine issue reasons along with rough idling, etc.., which makes sense because these engines have been trouble for so many people. There is an entire facebook page dedicated to that. I was only thinking wow, lucky that wasnt me. Mine sometimes sounds like a Diesel when idling....gonna ask the dealer to look deeper at why the monitor is not running and share the article with them.
