Mine malfunctioned a few days back. I had to shift into park, press the brake, and shift into drive to leave the green light. Not a good sign... I know you can push the button on the dash but if the shit messing up at 5000 miles It is not looking good .

Here’s an informal poll. I’ve been wondering this for a while. I for one have my auto start/stop enabled. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. But that’s not my question. I’ve had no problems with it whatsoever, and I’m creeping up on 20k miles. Since the aux battery is maintained with the alternator, just like the main battery, is it possible that owners that disable the feature in one way or another are causing their battery issues? Meaning if disabling the hood switch, using a Tazer, or just turning it off every day for extended periods disables the charging of the battery. Is that a possibility? If the feature is disabled, and that in turn stops charging the aux Battery, it would eventually fail. Just a theory. Thoughts? So I’d love to know if there are a large number of owners with premature aux battery failures, that have the feature enabled, or if most of the failures align with the feature being disabled.

I'm still running on the original set of batteries, which are over three years old. The system charges the batteries, regardless of the ESS button setting. I usually turn the ESS off using the button on the dash. Occasionally, I forget, and it still works like it is supposed to.

The ESS system cannot be disabled, removed, dismantled, or turned off. It is always on and monitoring the truck. The button on the dash, and the various devices and hacks used, only stop it from turning off the engine when it normally would.

The primary purpose of the ESS battery is to keep the computers stable during an ESS event. The batteries are separated from each other when ESS turns the engine off, the rest of the time they are paralleled together.

Good explanation. Thanks. Just curious. I leave mine connected, and enabled, unless I’m towing in town and want to avoid any pause. Otherwise it works fine. It’s close to instant, and if I don’t want it at a particular intersection, I just don’t push the brake to the floor.

I will use mine around town some, during the winter, as we have many long stop lights. I usually have it off because it gets hot here, and I like to be as comfortable as possible.

I'm with you Mr. Bill. 2 years on original batteries. After I start my truck, I hit the ESS disable on the dash. No problems here.

Makes sense. Our temps are super mild, so less of an issue. The heated seats save me in winter.

Jeep apparently did have a large run of poor quality ESS batteries some time back. The statistics are a bit misleading, as people will complain when there is a problem, but rarely say anything when things are okay.

The way the system is setup will hide failing batteries for quite a while, even longer for those with the higher capacity primary battery. Trucks that are driven daily, enough to keep the batteries charged, will also cover it up.

Seems i have the max big battery in my 22 Rubicon, non tow gasser. My ESS did not work when i got it and I had some strange voltage readings on the dash so I put trickle charger on it for a few days and all is good. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, What I am wondering is,,,, is the ESS part of the smog system? If it is and it fails or is disco'ed will that mean a failed smog test?

The ESS and Smog systems are separate. If either one fails, it will require a trip to the dealer to repair.
