For mostly short drives around town (what 99% of my miles are…JTR)…the fuel economy is pretty ghastly (~14.5 MPG), but that’s because most of my time is spent sitting at lights and then mashing on the skinny pedal. There’s no real “cruising” for more than a couple minutes at a time. By the time I let off on the accelerator (reached the speed limit), it’s about time to stop for the next light. ?

Highway driving or mixed driving, it’s not bad. If someone has to budget/really think about the cost of fuel…I wouldn’t recommend a Jeep.

21 mph AVERAGE speed in city is generous. You can use a GPS or other device and get your average speed going through town and I'd bet it's less than that by the time you account for stops and traffic. I've tracked it with my phone. Even going through Des Moines (not counting I235) no way you'll make an average of 21 mph east to west. Lots of stops and idling.

The highway part is off, on the other hand, the difference between 45 and 55 is minimal. Once you pass that mark you can see the differences. And going over 60-65 because wind resistance increases exponentially with speed - there ya go.
I think 55 to 65 would be a lot more realistic test of highway driving, and yet around much of GA, especially the Atlanta area, you won't make an average of 48 mph unless you travel through after 10 pm and even then we found all it takes is 1 or 2 idiots and you SIT for an hour (literally)
So maybe the guy who made up the tests for the EPA is from Georgia, the Atlanta area LOL

"The guy who made up the test also made the test when national speed limits were not over 55MPH and most places used 45-50MPH for "highway" use. City driving limits were 20-25. So, yes, these tests are out dated. But no one would like the numbers if they updated it. That being said, they should update it so they are giving accurate mileage.

I'm getting approx 19.6 in mixed driving. 3.6 auto in the Willys. Drops significantly with the top back though.

Towed this 55 miles today, in manual mode, 5 & 6th gears mainly to keep it at 62 - 66mph. I turned off the fuel economy screen and refuse to look at it.

my 22 JTA gobi averages 21.7 HC over its 7,600 mile lifetime ... my wife's 21 JTF nacho averages 19.7 HC over it's 9,300 lifetime .... did these mpg from tank one ... getting better over time/mileage is a hoax ... click on my fuelly icon below and you can see each fill up ... even my 2019 Ram Big Horn with the 392 gets 15 mpg (28,000 miles) overall average except when it is towing our 36' camper (then 10 mpg)

Getting 13.2 mpg around town a few short highway trips. Soft Top Gladiator

Mods are Jeep Fox Lift 35" tires on some stock OEM Jeep wheels maybe from a Ram model or something, possibly even the stock Gladiator wheels.

I don't know where I sit at currently b/c I have not manually calculated it yet. This is also only on my second fill-up since I purchased my 2020 Sport used a few weeks ago.

I'd like to at least get 15mpg around town. My girlfriends 2022 Wrangler 4 door HighTide edition gets 18mpg around town with it's oem 35's.

So I'm not sure where the extra 5mpg is coming from other than the added weight of the Gladiator but she also has the hardtop and freedom panels on full time.

Maybe I need to switch to 4.56 gears but at that expense it might just be worth it to stick to what I have and save money vs. buying gears and having a shop put them in. Probably cost me 1,500 to 2 grand.

Maybe lighter wheels would help. I know there has to be something a lot lighter than these Jeep OEM wheels but that would not make up 5mpg.

That's what I'm getting with stock 4.10 gears on 33's.

Gas mileage is the most disappointing thing about my JTR. It’s really bad. If I drive it like a grandma it might get over 15 mpg‘s mostly city. Otherwise it stays in the 14s. If I added some highway driving at 70-75 mph it will go up into the 16s. Really crappy.

When I'm up in NH, I'm driving around mostly on state roads. That means minimal stopping and running 50ish mph. In this environment my Gladiator on 35s gets about 18.5 mpg.

On the highway up to NH, I get about 17 mpg.

In town in a semi-urban environment in MA, I get about 15.5 mpg.

I've found that when my daughter and I drive to her ski comps in the winter, often early early morning with the air in the -10 to 0 deg range, the mpg can be 2-3 mpg worse than the 18 mpg I get in the same environment in the summer.

Around town, the temp doesn't really matter. You get worse mpg in the winter mainly because of the air density and the fact that it's "thicker". At lower speeds air density doesn't matter much because as others have said, aerodynamic drag increases as a square function. So the drag at 60 mph is 16 times the aerodynamic drag at 15 mph.

I'm new to this forum. I just purchased a new 2023 Gladiator Rubicon with the 6cyl engine and am averaging 14.5 (!?!) so far with 1100 miles on the odometer. 90% of my mileage is highway at 65-70 mph. This is our 4th new jeep since 2015 (all 4 door Wranglers 6 cyl. gas) and I must say I am very disappointed in the mileage of this Gladiator. The 2015 Wrangler got about 15mpg(which I expected) and the last one before this one was a 2019 Wrangler Moab which got 19-21 mpg on highway trips (with mud tires...). Should I take this thing back to the dealer for a check up? Any suggestions, comments, similar stories, or solutions would be welcome.
