JTR stock with mud terrains and 6 speed in Colorado: Averaging 19.6 MPG over 6500 miles.
It's 500 lbs. heavier, longer, has deeper standard axle gearing and less slippery in the wind. Yes, you're going to see reduced mileage.

Tonneau can hurt actually because you're removing the negative pressure area in the bed. Myth Busters I think did some episodes on that topic.

If you want to pick up a little MPG, remove those heavy Falken tires and switch to something P-rated and more lightweight. It'll shock you how much you'll pick up.
Are your Cooper tires p rated?

I also wonder how many people are shutting off their ESS system, I've seen the numbers and the science behind it and it's completely reasonable to lose 1-2mpg if it's always off. I plan to leave mine on.

I may start leaving mine on. I do not use it now but do wonder how much better the Mpgs would be if left on. I will say idling these thing lose MPGs quick. Even quicker than my 2017 mustang 5.0. I can idle for 45 minutes in it and only lose maybe .2 MPGs, in the gladiator your going to drop at least 1 mpg idling that long. What's crazy is I get better gas mileage out of a 5.0 than I do out of a Jeep Gladiator.

I was really close yesterday to changing my Sport S w/Max tow order in the system (factory hasn't accepted mine) over to the Rubicon until I read this thread about the possibility of MPGs appearing better on the Sport max/tow. I'm still on the fence now.

There are probably multiple variables to consider here and as @WXman pointed out even the tonneau cover can affect it. I remember that Myth Busters episode, it also dispelled the thought that leaving the tail gate down would help gas mileage.

So we know multiple factors, tire/rim size and weight, gear ratio, lift, tonneau cover, location, ESS on/off etc play into it at this point.

Still interested in my Rubi members coming forward with their mpg average. I'm hoping to see some around the 20+ mark like the sport max tow guys.

There is ZERO reason a Max Tow would get better MPGs than a Rubicon if both had the same wheels and tires, save for the aero pieces on the Sport that do deflect air really well at highway speed. So the differences should be minimal.

Mine got 19 stock, 17 on 285/70 KO2 tires, and 15-16 on 35" mud tires. Anybody claiming to get 20+ out of a Max Tow is either on stock tires or doesn't know how to do math. I drove mine like an old man and still never got close to those numbers.

Also, the ESS system is good for 1 MPG combined according to my Fuelly chart. The ESS system on my JLU died for 4-5 weeks and my mileage trendline took a dive. As soon as the dealer figured it out and fixed it, I instantly got the mileage back again. The dip in the line was clearly seen on Fuelly over time.

On Jeeps, gas mileage is all about tires. And the Falken tires, while amazing, are very heavy and kill efficiency.

I have a Sport no max... black sheep of the herd with 3.73’s

convinced by this thread I should cut off little Aero’s put 35’s and lift and 4.10’s to get better than 16.5. Maybe add a winch and heavy bumper too.

:blush::CWL::CWL::CWL:

hmmm i wonder if I added a max tow sticker ....

In all seriousness, just make sure you get the one you want with options you want and enjoy.

with the price of oil right now you’d think they would be paying us by the gal. LOL

Agree nobody is averaging over 20+ in a gladiator. I have on a trip, but not total average

Thought I would share my one day drive results. Stillwater MN to Dallas TX - 976.9 miles in 14 hours/39 minutes. Stopped 4 times for gas and bio break. I took pic's between fill up and found it interesting that my fuel mileage approved as it warmed up. It was 9 degree's when I left MN and I averaged 13.3 miles per gallon for that first tank. I ended up at an overall 14.6 miles per gallon. If I had to guess I averaged in the mid 60's for overall miles per hour.

I average 18.2 on my daily drive back and forth. Max tow with 10.50x35 kendas. Winch bumper and bed covered, speedo corrected. About 7 miles of narrow blacktop, 8 miles on two lane and 10 miles of 4 lane. Elevation starts at 2500 ft and downhill to 950 then uphill all the way home.
With the stock little tires could manage 20mpg.
Oddly going to work on the down hill trip if I push it to 70mph it does a little better on average on the live display.
out of curiosity I verified reported mpg to actual and was pretty much dead on.

I have noticed it improves in warmer weather. Could be warmer fluids or leaner mixture required.

Been looking at some of these mileage threads and I either have the one magic JT or I drive like an old woman. Sport with max tow and still the stock sport rims and tires, auto, 8,300 miles on it. Was averaging 21-23 first thousand miles, running 23-25mpg average now, with the auto stop./start on. Mainly flat around here, but didn't change much in the mountains. Only time it really tanked into upper teens was towing a trailer full of moving stuff.

I'm about the same as you, I have a Max Tow but put 33" KO2 tires on it. I've been averaging 20.7 mph but when I had the stock tires on it it was 21-23. I get between 16-18 towing my camper.

I have a Rubicon that is mostly stock. This is a picture from today just before I fueled up.
EDITED: Just to throw fuel on the fire - does traction control effect fuel milage?

12,400 miles Rubicon with manual. Get 18-20 mpg driving mostly in town. All highway 21-22 mpg between 70 & 75. If I got 15 mpg I would still be fine with it because I love the thing. When I pull my RV I get 11-12 mpg and stay in 4th and 5th gear.
18-20 running the manual? Do share how you are getting that. I can not seem to get above 16-16.5

Seeing all these other people with low mpg actually pisses me off. If it was just me that'd be one thing but we're all really low and I was expecting much higher once broken in. 16 city 23 highway does not equate to 16 overall for many of us driving on the highway a lot.
I am pissed. I am not seeing anywhere near the top end of the range on the sticker. I would love input from anyone on the site as to getting the most out of the mileage in the 6 speed.
