A lower temp thermostat doesnt increase cooling capacity. It just opens sooner.

"This thermostat starts opening at 88 C (190 F) and fully open at 98 C (208 F). This will drop warm operating temps for coolant and engine oil about 10 C (18 F). This is also beneficial for towing long grades as full cooling is reached at lower temps, so it takes longer to reach overheat protection in extreme environments (100 F towing large loads up a 6% grade) like Davis Dam in Arizona. This thermostat will only work with a GDE tune."

Any tune that increases power will increase heat. There's no free lunch.
The GDE tune increases power but doesn't increase heat.

Lol... people are reporting these derating issues when it's 90+F out, they're towing 3000+ lbs up a 9% grade. I haven't seen this issue when folks are just cruising around--but if they're out there, please let me know.
It takes a lot to derate an engine. I question how many are running oversized tires, towing over their payload, and/or exceeding their maximum GCW.

I just towed a 3500 lb. camper across South Dakota a few days ago, in 100F heat. Oil temps reached 255F on the steepest inclines, but never derated.
That's awesome.

My oil temperature hit around 256*F yesterday towing with our 2020 Ram EcoDiesel. It was 117*F when we reached the campground!

Definitely would make me second guess if I hadn’t been familiar with how warm this engine runs already.

I’ll be making my way south (in Yellowstone now), through Yosemite, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Zion, Grand Canyon, and finally White Sands. I’m sure there will be more 100F+ days than not… looking forward to it!

Wow, that's a long trip. We'll be in Sequoia National Park tomorrow. Maybe our paths will cross at some point. Is Yellowstone pretty crowded? We thought about going through Yellowstone on our way to the midwest.

I don’t think it’s been too bad. Decent amount of people, but not like you can’t get around to see things.

The only time people have been an issue is when there’s an animal on the side of the road and everyone stops to take a picture, which backs up traffic.

Again, replacing a thermostat with one that opens sooner will not increase the cooling systems capacity.

More power with a turbo motor always means more heat. Say what you want.

Are there some camping spots open in Yellowstone?

Yeah, I've seen it happen.

There are some spots open, usually if your lucky enough to find one. Tent is easier to find than RV. There is a KOA South on Highway 20 within 20 minutes of the West Entrance. If those don't pan out for you let me know, I live just over an hour from West Yellowstone and can point you to some open camping areas in Idaho.

Thank you, jwalt. I really appreciate it. For now, we have decided to head to Lake Tahoe and work our way back to New Mexico through Nevada and Utah. The plan is to hit Yellowstone next year (early June) to avoid some of the bigger crowds.

Sorry to hear that. Change your trip plans. There's a lot of neat places to go in the southwest.

As the title says, GDE is back and making an emissions compliant (EPA approved) tune! This is only for the 2nd gen engines, but GDE is also working on the 3rd gen engines! Here's what he said about his new tune!

"We expect an EPA certified 49-state tune to be ready 4 weeks after Michigan goes back to work. This will be for the engine and transmission tuning. Past customers can get this tune update, but there are some caveats.
1. New engine tune will be installed via the same OBD flash tool we use on the transmission. This is a $200 piece of hardware.
2. Vehicle must have latest dealer warranty update in the stock ecm. The flash tool will not work over an existing tuned ecm.
3. The reflash fee is still $50 for existing customers.

CARB is a slower process than EPA, so the CA solution might not be available until late summer.

The engine and trans tune still perform as before 30hp, 65ftlb torque, less turbo lag, cleaner engine oil, reduced frequency of DPF regens, and 2-4 mpg improvement over FCA AEM and V07/V08 updates. The combustion is tailored to reduce soot formation in cylinder. This means the egr that is used has much less soot in it and the intake stays much cleaner. Also, FCA has a calibration issue that we think leads to the melted intakes, this issue is eliminated with the emission compliant tune we will have out soon."
with this tune, can it exempt the egr cause that would be awesome since i dont want any of that nasty soot in my intake and ruining the engine over time and robbing power as well

Since the tune is EPA compliant, it cannot disable the ECR function. The tune can, however, clean up the combustion and therefore reduce the amount of soot going into the intake, reduce regens, and extend oil changes intervals. I can't speak for the 3rd gen engine, but on the second gen engine, there's extra fuel being burnt just to quiet the engine. The tune eliminates that feature which saves fuel and adds to the cleaner combustion. You will notice that even though the EGR is intact and functioning, your engine oil stays cleaner much longer.

I checked in with him again this morning and he's still saying Fall 2021 for the tune to be ready for Jeep applications. Likely October. So we're getting REALLY close!!

Do you know if the tune will be CARB legal?
