I’m would think that all the Jeep models and Ram 1500 would be using the same engines and I’m curious if the Gen 2 could be replaced by the Gen 3 when the time comes for a rebuild?

I have 2018 Grand Cherokee with the Gen 2 with 227,400 miles and just thinking ahead to when the time comes.

I also have a 2022 Gladiator with the Gen 3.

I dont think it will work unless the ECM is changed also . Because the gen3 have variable lash. Gen 2 variable timing. Size wise yeah bolt right up . Maybe @Hootbro or @ShadowsPapa can shed some better light there . That is above my pay scale . I only get paid from the neck down.

There are technically only TWO generations - but the internet has created confusion by saying there are 3.
Officially, there's the original from about 2011-2015, then Gen II from 2016 to current.
Not all FCA vehicles got the Gen II (often called the PUG or Pentastar UpGrade engines) in 2016 - it was phased in over time.

If you have a 2018 Grand Cherokee - it was the first to get the PUG or Gen 2 engine, and it's the same thing as the Gladiator has - there is no Gen 3 engine. Grand Cherokee was the first to get the upgrade (PUG) in 2016 -same thing you have in your 2022 Gladiator.

So - Grand Cherokee 3.6 in 2016 on is the same engine the Gladiator got in 2020 and still has.

Wait a minute - are we talking DIESELS here????

That's a whole different animal and I don't get involved in the diesel engines.

I thought we were talking gassers - so I'm bowing out. I wondered where the "gen 3" bit came from, then looked up where he had posted this.

The problem is - the Grand Cherokee is the same 3.6 as the Gladiator. Not sure where he got this 3 generation thing or why he believes the WK2 has anything different from the JT - only in TUNEs, etc.
Ahhhhhhhh........this is DIESEL...........LOL They are different.

I didn't know were I was either 😂😂. So it's my fault . I knew I didn't know enough to comment too much. My bad 🤭.. I suspect @ShadowsPapa you probably could comment much deeper than I any way on the subject.

No problems guys. I didn’t put diesel in the post because of where I posted it. Sorry to confuse you so late in the day.
