Help identifying noise

Hi!

My jeep is just out of warranty, and I'm trying to identify a speed related whine/hum before throwing parts at the truck.

The noise is not present when front is locked and rears are spinning on ice, and it does not change when turning. Does not change with 4hi or 4lo either.

I'm happy to stand corrected, but I'm thinking internal bearings inside the front differential.

I reported that multiple times to the dealership while in warranty, but nothing has been done.

It’s either diffs or hub bearings. Definitely NOT transmission. What has your maintenance schedule been on the diffs?

Jack up all four corners, traction control off and put it in 4x4 drive. Have someone up top and you get underneath with stethoscope and touch the diffs. You’ll find your bad bearing.

it’ll probably be loud enough you don’t need a stethoscope.

It’s either diffs or hub bearings. Definitely NOT transmission. What has your maintenance schedule been on the diffs?

Rear diff pinion seal with new fluid in January(was leaking), and front diff fluid change was done about 1.5 years ago. This truck also had both rear axles replaced, along with some bearing inside the diff, for a very similar noise.

Bearings usually has a higher pitch whine. Imo, it's gear related noise. If you have a spare cell phone, you can strap it the axle tube, tcase and record it.

Your best bet would be a camera underneath. The noise will travel the entire suspension and frame which makes it hard to find. I had a similar noise. At one point I thought it was the wheel bearings. I put cameras underneath and found out it was the rear pinion bearing.

To anyone looking at this;

It ended up being the carrier assembly and bearings (pinion etc.)inside the REAR differential. The rear driveshaft center bearing was also shot. That's an expensive part because the bearing itself is not serviceable, but FCA owned up to it despite my warranty being over.

Do you have magnetic drain plugs in your diffs?

Did you used a center bearing drop spacer? Did they replaced just the bearings or whole axle?

Yep. I kinda felt like the pinion bearings would be a part of the problem. Been there, done that. That's why I posted the link to the video. Sometimes you just never know and some issues are hard to narrow down. Glad they found your problem.

Did they go with stock (Ball) pinion bearings or did they change over to Timken (roller) bearings? I assume that because it was the dealer, they went with stock.
