So did you notice any changes? I just bought my first JT and it's amazing that the engine bay is so restricted to letting air pass through. Looking at the intake and how close it is to the hood, where does the air come from in that tight spot?
I am in AZ and we have very little rain. What you did would be perfect for my engine provided it actually has an advantage?
Maybe just anecdotally, but I was getting another 1 mpg until winter hit. Also, I’m not really concerned about water getting in. I’ve done this on multiple vehicles, to one degree or another, and never had an issue. It’s not a direct to intake plumbing it just opens the air box and When it snows, not that you’d have that problem, it goes back to the normal intake situation.

It definitely sounds and looks better.

I read that the Rubicon hood with its barely usable vents wasn't a good option for keeping these engines cool. I would like to do your mod but should I look for a hood with the vents and then perform the mod. Then I could get rid of the OEM vents and replace with the Valkyrie louvered style vents. Also, what are your thoughts on the foam near the firewall for engine noise? Heard those really restrict the movement of air in the engine bay. I live in Phoenix, AZ and would really like to be prepared for the heat coming up. This is just a work truck and I won't be hauling anything but I will be going up north where the mountains are so up hill climbs are normal. I don't mind the diesel sounds so removing the foam wouldn't bother me there. I have a 7.3l Superduty and love how it sounds.

I pulled all the NVH foam and the plastic engine cover from mine, and it definitely sounds more like a diesel now. You'll also get to hear the turbo whistle. It's not loud and intrusive at all. If you like your 7.3 you'll like how the 3.0 sounds with the NVH removed.

I know engine temps are a big source of contention on this site and there’s an extremely long thread on every conceivable way to provide additional cooling, but I haven’t had any issues at all. I’ll add that I have tow tune from MRTuning and a 3” turbo back exhaust that really helps this truck move

There are multiple posts in multiple threads about trying to mitigate heat with the EcoD by adding vents, removing foam, various intakes, opening wheel wells etc., and nothing had a significant impact on temps, most showed zero impact on temps. If there was any solid, proven way it would have been found by now. With that said, you're free to try whatever you'd like, but I wouldn't expect to see much improvement.

I would like to do this mod. The straight pipe seems relatively inexpensive but I don't like how there may be a chance I won't pass emissions. I still have 6 months left my warranty as well. Not sure what I would do.

What mod's if any have you done to yours? Can you do tuners and turbo back exhausts without having emissions issues?

Was any dyno testing done before cutting holes in the body, like doing some pulls with the hood open and closed to see if there’s actually restriction there?

Mine is deleted and tuned with an AFE cai. The emissions question is dependent on the state you live in. In Md, they require emissions but don’t test diesel’s so it is a risk, but totally worth it. You’ll hear a lot of people tell you your warranty will be voided, which is a strong possibility, but the reality is that it’s determined by the dealership you work with.

It wasn’t dyno tested. I’m not a tuner or a race car driver, as much as I’d like to be one. I just want to be able to pass properly on the highway and have a reliable truck. While not tested, there was always a serious sucking noise from the hood, which I would expect when trying to pull air through a half inch gap. Now,I have the equivalent of a 4” diameter hole through my hood, in addition to the gap, and it is obviously less restriction( not to mention it sounds amazing and looks good too.

delete the smog crap and run a straight pipe from the turbo back. You also have to keep the front grill area open.
I’ve never had an over temp towing in the summer.
