We had a big black SUV with tinted windows pull into our driveway one afternoon when I was outside in the shop. My wife saw it and radioed me to get to the house.
It reminded me of the big SUVs they drive on the TV shows, or heck, even in a movie we all know the name of.
I got up to the house to see one of them looking across the front of the house kind of like he was looking for points of possible egress.
The other came to the back door (the only one we ever use anyway - my wife as the front blocked with more quilting stuff and the table she does quilt bindings on)
They asked me if I lived there, yeah, are you the owner, yeah, and if they could come in and talk.
Sure - why not?
Then they asked stupid questions like how many bedrooms did we have - well, our "master" which is smaller than most people's nursery, a corner bedroom that the prior owners used for one of their kids - then a teeny 10x12 bedroom if you want to call it that which had been a nursery for the prior owners. They asked - is it just the two of you here? Yeah.
Then why 3 bedrooms.
(WTF - really? How about guests, or when my oldest son and his wife come to visit)
I flipped the script - how may people do you know with a 1 bedroom house?
Is there anyone else in here with you?
Uh, no, just my wife (wonder what was going on) and me.
Can we look around?
Well, we're not great housekeepers but go for it!
Is there any other way out of the house?
Nope - I wanted to say - if there's a fire, we're all going to die, but didn't............ darn........

Then I realized - they were looking for my youngest son.
It went on and on from there, but I equated those two with Keystone Cops. They were clueless, had no idea the medical history or personality of the person they were looking for and IMO were total dopes.
I explained a few things to them and sent them on their way.
I'd say, no one has anything to worry about after meeting those two clowns.

I have zero to hide, nothing (much) to be ashamed of, and have mostly gotten over my old ADHD killer driving habits (surprised I didn't die years ago - man, it was stupid.)

If my letting cops snoop or come in and that sort of thing catches a bad guy - so be it.

I've worked with police departments and the courts, I've helped train prosecutors.
There's a reason my answer is always "I invoke and refuse to waive my 5th amendment rights" or not answering the door if I'm home. I know too much about how the justice system works and have seen too many people pushed into a plea deal because they couldn't afford to defend themselves.

Let me ask a related question because I saw it come up a while back - when the cops come and want to take you for questioning, or even for arrest, must they say WHY? Or not?
That's what would tick me off - "come with us"........... I want to know WHY!
And if I am not under arrest, I won't leave my property - if I am, I want to know why.

I had those two feds so twisted up when they left - I was laughing as they drove away.
I also won't fall for trickery. They wanted to know where my son was - uh, how would I know that if we haven't talked in years (I had an idea, but if they can't figure it out..............)
If they were an example of our finest, we're in deep trouble.

If the cops had reasonable articulable suspicion, they wouldn't be asking. You'd already be in cuffs and you don't have a choice. Same for searching your home or car - if they wouldn't be asking if they had cause or a warrant. The answer in every case is "I don't consent to searches" and then STFU. Say nothing else at all, don't engage, don't try to argue your way out. Cops are allowed to lie to you.

You cannot talk your way out of an arrest or detention - but you sure as hell can talk your way into one. The fact is you don't know why they are there or what they have. If you get pulled over and the cop asks "where are you coming from?" it sounds innocent enough, you have nothing to hide, right? "I was just picking up dinner over a Jim's Grocery"

Maybe you don't know something, like there was a robbery at that store a few minutes after you left, or some other crime was reported in that area. Maybe you match the description of someone they happen to be looking for - you just don't know. But I guarantee that "the suspect stated he had just left Jim's Grocery store before he was pulled over" is going to come up in court.

In reality cops don't care about finding the "right" suspect and prosecutors don't care about the truth - both are KPIs they are trying to hit for closed cases and convictions. That's their goal, clear the case and move on, get the plea deal and move on. The dogged determination to exonerate the suspect in order to find the real criminal is not a thing in the real world. Once the police and the prosecutor have their sights on someone, the focus switches to making that case. They get tunnel vision and anything that doesn't help make their case is disregarded or folded into their narrative of why they still have the right suspect.

It's unfortunate that this thread has devolved into the typical rhetoric around eroding privacy. But Stelantis cramming more advertisements onto your dash isn't cool, I already get enough for XM radio and uconnect subs.

Fine except for that bit - very very different animal. If it gets to that point here - (it already is in other parts of the world), only "preppers" (not meaning as a derogatory term!) will be safer - not safe, but safest, safer, whatever.

Cops have a lot of arterial pathways in the pelvic region (belly button-upper thighs) and no bullet proof protecting it



On the cell antenna thing, my concern is since the unit will be searching for signal, it boost the signal strength and power use if disconnected Increasing heat.
