TL;DR - if you don't want Jeep sending ads to your center screen call
800-777-3600

Here's an article dissecting the BS Stellantis is trying to spin about the ads, saying the inability to opt-out was a "glitch". Apparently they think we are all idiots and will believe that not setting up an 800 number, training call center employees, publishing opt-out steps, or including any opt-out option in their in-house software is a "technical glitch".

Douglas Adams captured this 46 years go:

“But Mr Dent, the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months.”
“Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.”
“But the plans were on display
”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a torch.”
“Ah, well the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice didn’t you?”
“Yes, yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard’. Ever think of going into advertising?”

And that's why I opted for the Uconnect 4 on the 5 inch screen...

There is one antenna connected to the head unit, that goes to the top of the cage. And then there is a second cellular antenna behind the driver side knee speaker.

My google-fu is failing me at the moment, but there is a thread about replacing the knee speakers. That is where I found how to disconnect the the second antenna, without remove a good amount of the dash. That thread calls it a GPS antenna, but it is the second cellular.

IIRC, you'll need a terminating resistor, or deal with the error code, once the second antenna is removed.

I'm 6k miles away from the bumper to bumper thing running out, which is when the second antenna and terminating resistor will be done here.

I got to figure out how to disable just the cell signal and keeps the card intact for the GPS function. I do have some experience with industrial Sierra Link 4g modem.

3 JTs and a JLU, no ads ever.
Not concerned about any of the other stuff - we're all watched anyway just because we use forums, email, internet, phones, computers, credit cards and more.
But it's odd, never seen a single ad for anything, not even 1.

I hate this argument. “You have a cell phone” when trying to talk privacy makes me want to punch someone.

My cell phone can be turned off or left at home, I can use a dumb phone. My cell doesn’t make my car insurance go up, I can also install software that limits data harvesting, like 3rd party app tracking blockers or a VPN.

Or maybe “fuck it, you have to start somewhere.”

“You don’t like X, but you didn’t mention Y, hur hur derp, gotcha!” Makes someone look like a monument to a failed education system.

Your car doesn't make your insurance go up either. That GM bit is settled and done. (with the media's help over-blowing it of course - the guy really deserved his new rate)

So, you keep your phone off? Sounds like you either leave it off or leave it at home. Bet you don't -bet it's with you most of the time, even away from home. So that's no argument at all.
And there is this -
new iPhones can use the "Find My" network to be located even when turned off, and both Android and iPhones show the device's last known location before it was shut down. Law enforcement agencies and other groups may have more advanced tracking capabilities.

So that argument "I can turn it off or leave it at home is bunk, too - because who does that?

You CAN install all of that software - have you?
Do you use credit cards of any type?

I'd be most who take your stance on it haven't done any of the other stuff like VPN, or other software, and I bet their phone is with them all the time, even powered on.
So unless you power it off and leave it at home................ that one should be left out of the argument.

What pose do you want for your statue?

This is absolutely part of a bigger problem, but saying “Y exists so you have to accept X” is the most pin-headed moronic argument I’ve heard.

The scope of this forum is Gladiators and politics is banned - it’s not the place to lobby, advocate, or strategize about broader privacy. There are plenty of places for that and we can take this conversation there. I recommend reading some of the stuff posted by the Mozilla Foundation and EFF. Proton is a viable Google suite alternative and includes both a an encrypted password manager and a VPN (including for mobile devices). For under $20 you can also set up a PiHole on your home network.

remember those tests to get into college or grad school that included critical reasoning and logic? Understanding the scope of the discussion was part of those logic games. The scope of this forum is the JT - if someone wants to limit sharing of data to stellantis, let them discuss how. Every time this comes up spmempinhead has to pipe up with the same bullshit, be helpful or STFU and let others talk.

You said the car insurance argument doesn’t apply because GM got sued - which is proof that this sharing of information can be damaging to owners. Before that discovery people were saying the same thing - “just let it happen, it’s not hurting you.” The more we know the more we
Learn about how our data opens us to exploitation in thousands of hidden and subtle ways. And after the next discovery people will continue to say the same thing “oh, that fixed it”.
I’d argue that if the “lay down and take it” crowd had listened to the rest of us who were concerned about data privacy for the last two decades, GM never would have had the chance to do what they did.

The fact is, you don’t know this data isn’t being used to harm owners, and saying it’s not happening shows an incredible deficit of understanding in both logical reasoning and common goddamned sense.

I guess I know nothing about it as a guy who helped prevent the Chinese and others get into government networks, setup firewalls, routers, VPN servers and more.

Sounds like a few more drops of the Aspen Green are needed.

Just because it’s on your CV doesn’t mean your argument here makes any sense. As someone who worked in information security, you of all people should understand the value of data.

Which meeting were you in when you said “The Chinese already cracked a database, so there’s no reason to secure these others”?
