Insurability of a diesel Gladiator

Just a thought. Insurance companies will naturally total a vehicle if parts to repair are not available. Does anyone think that a JEEP Gladiator equipped with the short-lived diesel engine, may not be insurable in the near future? I imagine this engine. is s till being used in Europe. I don't know personally that this engine was used in anything else but the JEEP Wrangler, Gladiator and RAM 1500. For what, 3 years?

I have interest in buying a Gladiator with the diesel. It has had the high pressure pump replaced. Has this engine been used in anything. else within the USA. And for those that have this power plant, are you concerned about issues with this engine in say, the next 10 to 15 years that might make it not-insurable? Let alone, self-fix/repair versus parts or complete engine availability?

Ram had the diesel for nearly 10 years. VM made something like 100k ecodiesel engines for the US market. And it's not like it was some one-off engine made up of exclusive parts, it's made with parts that are shared with other engines.

Has there ever been a car that is unrepairable due to parts availability within 10-15 years?

With few exceptions, everything is insurable regardless if it can be repaired in the future. They just pay you out for current fair market value. Insurance companies generally do not drop people from their insurance just because parts become scarce.

As to future parts availability, I have seen more than a few platforms live on for 20+ years after discontinuation of powertrain options are eliminated with usually the salvage, recycle and aftermarket supporting it. No crystal ball that can say for certain on such things, but if the market is there, it will be supported but at a higher cost.

I think the biggest issue that will be coming up as these vehicle age regardless if diesel or gas, is going to be the electronics and infotainment support. A 20-30 year old classic vehicle today is a lot more analog and easier to repair than ours will be in 20-30 years.

This would not concern me one bit. My gladiator is the cheapest vehicle insurance I have by a long shot. If the “rarity” of the diesel were an issue or concern, I don’t think it’d be so cheap to insure.

If you got in a wreck bad enough to cause engine damage then I doubt it matters if it's a gasser or a diesel.

Different variations of this motor have been around for a long time 10+ years in Rams trucks Jeep Wranglers, Gladiators and Grand cherokees there's thousands of these motors we have zero issue's getting parts even older version of this motor. Buy the diesel you won't regret it.

An insurance company could just play its trump (not Donald) card, call it totaled and pay you the fair market value, just as they would if you were involved in an accident. In 10-15 years, the book value will be relatively low so I would not see them going out of their way to repair it if parts were not available.

They won't total it. I have a Blazer that's been waiting for parts for 5 months. Simple rear end collision.
What year is the Blazer? I can somewhat understand that the insurance company doesn't want to total a newer vehicle but if you are driving one of the older Blazers, it doesn't make sense. Based on what I have seen, insurance companies would only be paying a highly depreciated amount (a few thousand possibly) instead of going through all the time and effort to get it fixed. I had a 12 year old Wrangler (back in the late 90's) and someone ran a stop sign and did some damage to the driver's side of the vehicle. In my opinion, it wasn't that bad and thought it would involve a new door and left front fender.

I liked the Jeep and wanted it repaired. But when the State Farm adjustor saw it, he said it was not worth the risk to the company since they didn't really know what damage was "hidden" and they didn't want to have the Jeep returned a week or so later with additional problems that must be fixed. I received a check for about $6k shortly thereafter and went shopping for another Jeep.

No I do not see any issue with insurance companies looking negatively at the gladiator with a diesel engine. There are many power plants in a lot of different brands that are changed and become obsolete over the years. I would not own a gladiator without the diesel engine unless maybe I could get it with a V8. I would still prefer the diesel as my first choice. It’s a very fun vehicle with the diesel torque. You are probably way over thinking the issue. If you buy the diesel gladiator you won’t regret it. I promise you that…🙂

Most of the time if the engine needs replacing from a wreck it’s a total lost

They still insure model T's and those parts haven't been around in 70 years.

My thoughts exactly. I had no problem insuring my old Nova. At the same time I don’t want to think about what they’d do to replace the parts. Since I’m the builder I’d assume they would just pay me for the damages and say handle my business. My bigger concern with its insurance is I determined the value. So if it gets stolen, burns down, totaled, etc they write me a check for what I told them it was worth.
