This is a very small intermittent clunk on take-off from a start. Sounds like it is coming from the rear dif. I've read about rear diff "lash" or looseness. I've had other trucks, but never experienced this before. Taking the JTRD in for it's 1st service this Tuesday. Should I mention it? Not sure if normal or not. Not always reproducible.
Appreciate the comments.

It’s most likely not normal. I’m sure the dealership will tell you it’s normal or either they weren’t able to replicate the sound.

If the backlash is off enough to make a clunk noise, it’s off too much.
Order a Dial indicator with a magnetic mount and measure the slop. Should fall between 7-9 thousandths.

Too much slop and you are prematurely wearing the gears, and will shorten the life.

honestly- this is a two for one. The rear diff fluid is probably full of breaking metals anyway…. (Mine was @ 1,000 miles)

watch a couple YouTube videos on differential backlash- this could be done in the driveway with very little tools…

or

take it to the dealer.

Got the truck back from the dealership. ECU flash for the DEF recall/issue. The backlash issue wasn't severe enough to investigate according to the service advisor. I have to admit. It is pretty mild and intermittant.

thanks for all that replied.
