So I was doing some interior work tonight and had to remove the dash. Wasn't too bad of a job taking it apart. The question I have is, have you ever looked at the back of your airbag? I live in a high humidity, salty air climate (less than a half mile of the gulf), but I was kind of shocked to see this.

So is this normal? The surface rust is what kind of concerns me.

Changing the thread title to include phrasing the oxidation question would help with future searches

I don't think that's normal. I'm pretty sure that should me coated in a film to prevent it from rusting. I'd clean it up and hit it with something to protect it. I'm pretty sure there is a WD-40 corrosion inhibiter you can buy. I've used it once a long time ago on my YJ and it seemed to work fine.

Pretty sure rust on the inflators was one of the Takata issues. I’d be visiting the dealer

I personally wouldn't second guess it in my truck. I have taken apart a number of vehicle interiors, and any uncoated bare steel parts start to develop surface rust to some degree in all of them. If you look on Ebay, every used airbag from even new vehicles has some surface rust on the back.

FWIW, I Googled this for the heck of it and there is a thread about a rusty airbag in just about every vehicle forum you can imagine, including on new parts folks bought from dealers. No conclusive results.

Either way, do what makes you comfortable. If that's a dealer visit, go for it.

There’s a lot of interior parts like that (historically) that rust up like than and no further… it’s not the same problem as the takeda airbags.

It is “galvanized” or similar that’s why you only see it where the crimping broke the coating. You see the same on solenoids and transformers all over the place. Maybe paint isn’t good enough or fouls something. I don’t know why a lot of electronic parts are like that

show the pic to your dealer or send it to Jeep. PROBABLY ok.

I haven't seen too many airbag housings without rust like that. I agree that it has been an issue with some recalls, but I'm guessing you will be told it is normal.
