Damn…that sucks!! So, that thing behind the glove box…
What exactly did they do? Or maybe you can’t answer that…

I’m guessing some type of ‘code’ reader…. but but….You’d think it really shouldn’t be that easy!!

hello all

two days ago I was extremely fortunate to be out walking my new puppy when I saw my Jeep pass by down the street between two buildings.
fortunately it's such a bright color and so highly modified it that I recognized it out of my peripheral vision and looked up and managed to verify not only that it was in fact Nacho.Diesel but I also observed the driver and another vehicle closely following it. I immediately called 911, the officers arrived in just a few minutes and in working with some federal agencies and the power of social media, the Jeep was located and seized from the thieves just as it was entering Mexico approximately 40 minutes later.

I was asked not to add many more details as there will be legal proceedings BUT what I can say is the thieves broke out my d side window, climbed over to passenger compartment and accessed the terminal behind the glovebox to make a new key. I don't know approximately how long it took for this to happen but I do know the Jeep was seen still parked approximately 30 minutes before I saw it driving by.

I have been splitting my time since dealing with the incredible officers dealing with my situation, getting glass replaced and doing a ton of research between short anxiety filled naps where I make myself get up and go check on the Jeep. I am looking for any and all ideas on how to both electronically and mechanically deter theft.

For my own anxiety's sake and for the rest of our incredible community, please toss in ideas or any experience with things you've tried or heard about

TIA

Sorry for your situation, but glad that things worked out in the end. I would recommend looking at Dan Grec's videos on YouTube from The Road Chose Me. He has a video in one of his series about a kill switch. You can find his email on his page, and he's a real gent, gets back to people fairly quickly.

From what I remember, the most important part (aside from the obvious technical bits) is that only you know where it is, and how it is activated.

I wonder about removing a select pin or two from that connector. Just buy a pin extraction tool for that connector to make it easy.

So, do you think they did something ‘behind the dash’ to get your key fob frequency? Of is there potential that they have been stalking you and captured your key fob signal/frequency?

All they do is bring a blank FOB, rip your glovebox off, plug in 2 connectors, program the key using their programmer ( many available ), and leave. 60 seconds tops. They need nothing from you. Faraday box for FOBs does nothing here.

It's criminal that Jeep does NOTHING to address this vulnerability.

Simple….cut the starter signal wire (smaller wire) and route an on-off switch “somewhere “ hidden underneath dash, seat or console and unfortunately you will need to switch off and on every time you start the car but sounds like you don’t have a secured area to park your car. So that means more sleep for you. No cameras no WiFi just circuit break! 👍

Wow, one unfortunate event followed by a series of very fortunate events. Glad it all worked out, and I hope they throw the books at the thieves they caught, red handed.

the garage is gated and has cameras. Quite a few supercars park in the same place but theres nothing stopping a car from following another or presumably someone on foot in this case from coming in. I have a large acreage ~ 30 miles away but its remote and currently access is cut off due to a rockslide across the road. Probably 4 months before that is an option.

So if it’s gated(parking area) how did someone drive out in your gladiator? Not only did they steal your car but on foot or not they had to open the gate??? Sounds like you have other security issues than just the automobile.

Exit gates automatically open it would be a major fire code violation if not

Ahhhh! Gotcha! Wouldn’t have known that without the exposure of that kind of setup …. Makes sense . 👍

Still reverting back to my initial comment if the area is extremely volatile to theft just a simple circuit break would be all you need. Whether it is in starter circuit or in the park position switch etc.

I leave this empty box on the passenger seat when I have the doors off. Park anywhere, so far no problems, lol.

I'll never buy blazer again. I hadn't gone to the range in a couple of months and something told me to check my clip. Thank god I did because the back pressure would have destroyed my face.

I ordered the Ampire immobilizer from Germany. I'm going to install it in a place that requires 1 hour of interior disassembly to access. Nobody will bother trying to find that.

We all know the tow truck argument but that is not how these are being stolen they're being stolen because it's easy.
