From FCA press release when they introduced the 2nd Gen Pentastar...

"Windage-tray weight was slashed by 19 percent and front-cover weight was cut by 5 percent. The oil pan was redesigned from a two-piece to a single-piece pan and the sump was reduced from a 6-quart fill to a 5-quart fill – resulting in an overall 5-pound weight savings compared with the previous generation Pentastar V-6 engine."

LOL - they use bulk dispensers. They don't sit there and open 5 bottles. It's like I did on the farm, buy the oil in the barrel, and use a metered dispenser. Those aren't always 100% accurate but pretty darned close. It's not worth their time to open bottles.
When I worked in the parts department at a Saab/Subaru dealer, the cars took 4 quarts. We used gallon milk jugs. I would get to work 30 min before service opened in the morning and I'd fill 30 of them and put them on the side parts counter with filters and drain plug gaskets.

When Saab went to 5 quarts with the 2.3 and V6, we added half gallon milk jugs filled half way. Ha.

The Techs would be given an RO, they would grab a gallon of oil, filter, and gasket off the counter, and write it in on the RO. It worked well enough and we saved them a lot of time waiting at the counter. Plus it got the customer "wait" out the door faster.

At the end of the day there were always a couple of "missing" gallons of oil, but it was still worth it for the increased efficiency in the shop and better customer satisfaction

Yeah, instead of them waiting while you cranked the oil out of a drum.
You obviously realize how that stuff works in most shops.
There's good articles out there on how oil labs go around and test oils for certifications, API and so on certs and labels.
They don't rely on the oil suppliers to give them the REAL stuff that consumers get - they assume some will cheat. So they send people out from the lab to shops, not unlike where you were, to go buy oil. They'd watch it being pumped out of drums, made notes as to the oil info on the drum, take it back and test it. Sometimes they'd go shopping at stores to buy it off the shelf, but the reference to buying oil out of the drums at shops was interesting.
That way the labs that do the testing for the certification outfits (they don't do the testing themselves, they have other labs do it for them) - they are dead certain to be testing the same oil you and I get when we get oil changes. Or, the same oil you put into milk jugs.
I did a bit of that myself on the farm. I'd save up gallon jugs of various types and put oil in them. A lot easier when it was spring planting or fall harvest, when the pressure was on to do the service and get back to the field ASAP. It was all measured out, easier to pour in, and drive back out to the field ready to go.
Funny thing - I was just cleaning up in my garage a bit after putting the plow stuff on my truck and decided to finally stow the original parts from my truck up in the loft - climbed the stairs and hanging from one of the rafters was one of the oil pumps I took with me from the farm - figuring hey, I may need that some day. LOL - that's from the 1980s, and it's still hanging up there!
I still have a partial bucket of hypoid gear lube with the pump still in it but that does get used now and then.

Sorry people have sucky dealerships and poor oil. Mine uses synthetic and is a mile from my house.

Really? We had to itemize everything, even on PDIs, TSBs or recalls. I guess someone figured out that processing some extra lines on a repair order cost more in labor than a few fraudulent warranty claims.
Jeep pays the dealer $35.00 or $50.00 depending on the vehicle for the oil change plus $10.00 for the tire rotation.

I have used the Jeep Wave oil changes on all three of my Gladiators and in the instances of them putting in 6 quarts, found the following:

  • They are still confusing the JK spec that took 6 quarts.
  • The oil change tech after putting in 5 quarts is not waiting the required 10 minutes for the oil to settle in the pan and is checking the dipstick early and showing low and then adding the 6 quart.
Luckily my current servicing dealership seems to be better about this.

Rather than “canceled” I’m not sure all dealers honor the Jeep Wave program

I also had a similar experience with my Jeep Wave Program being canceled. I was informed of the cancelation by the dealer while getting the oil changed under the program. After several phone calls with Jeep and the General Manager at the dealer I purchased from and about 3 weeks time, Jeep Wave has been reinstated. Everybody was pointing their finger at everybody else blaming the "other guy" but I was never given an explanation. I have a JTRD so to me 3 free oil changes was a plus. I won't get into what oil the dealer uses LOL. Good Luck

It’s sad to say, especially given the cost of oil changes in the diesel but I’m not sure I trust a tech to put oil in my vehicles anymore. I probably ought to do a rant thread on the service department at Pearson Jeep in Richmond, VA. I’m in Hampton Roads, but I drove 1.5 hours to buy it from them. I don’t like the dealerships down here either. It’s a roll of the dice whether you get a good tech or a moron or just some guy more interested in playing on his phone than to remember how much oil or what kind of oil he’s putting in your truck.

I had this happen last year. Was told Wave was cancelled and paid for oil change but dealer followed up, found out it some jackass at Jeep changed my Wave eligibility while doing computer up grade. Jeep sent me a check for the entire amount with an apology. Can't say what happened in your case but I'd keep bugging them for a refund.

Not sure got the run around from Mopar, jeep wave, and jeep chat. called 5 different people and they all forwarded me and or gave me the number i had to call and kept passing the bill. even went to jeep wave 2x even though they supposedly arent open on weekends... @JeepCares I would like some help... Had to shell out 286.47. I think they did 9 quarts. 50 bucks for the rotation too....
