Had owned our 2022 JTR 3.6 for one day short of a year last week Thursday when check engine light came on and engine started running rough. Right at 20.5k miles. Got service appointment for this past Wednesday, dropped it off at 7:00 a.m., they had it back to us by 3:00 p.m. Thursday.

Has this root cause of this type of failure ever been determined with any certainty? By that I mean something like bad metallurgy in the camshaft, lifters or rocker arms? Poor design of the oiling system on that cylinder head?

Given that it has failed and been repaired once, is it fixed for good? Or is it something that has a higher likelihood of happening to us again and we should be prepared for that?

The question I would ask is: “ Where did all of the material from the damaged lobe go?”
Obviously it circulated within the engine to some degree.

Have just less than 22k miles on the truck, have gotten the oil changes done at about 7k mile intervals.

Sorry your going through this !! They say it affects a low percentage of 3.6 s But there has to be a reason why this is happening ? It’s hard not to wonder who’s next. It’s been on my mind ever since I have heard about it !! I also agree about metal shavings going through the motor ? Hopefully the oil filter got them ? Maybe do an oil analysis next couple oil changes ? Looks like you got around 38,000 miles and 4 years left on the power train warranty. Also looks like you got a good dealer getting you in and getting it taken care of.

Less than 2,000 miles later the Malfunction Indicator Light came on yet again:

Though since it was the same cylinder bank as the last time (misfire on cylinder #1, this time misfire on cylinder #3) and last time they only replaced the rockers on cylinder #1, not the entire odd bank, I'm not that surprised that it failed again so soon.

Hopefully the third time is the charm.

Lemon law? Nah. We love everything about this truck except for the durability of the intake valve train. Anything bigger won't fit in our garage, anything smaller wouldn't be able to tow our camper. Until the power train warranty runs out this engine is Stellantis's problem. After that, we already have an extended warranty.

Just had mine replaced a few months ago, so watching this. I’m about 3k miles out now. They replaced all 6 lash adjusters on mine. I’ve done 2 ~500 mile oil changes and just about to do a 2k oil change. Oil analysis on the last one showed very little iron, so I decided to extend this oil change to see how things go.

It’s not just one thing but can be several different failures for different misfires. My first engine had the P0302 and it required a new cam and parts and the second engine misfire was P0305 and it ended up being a bad spark plug at 60k kms. I replaced all the plugs and it runs real nice.

Any chance your truck sits for long intervals? Maybe the lifter is collapsing and the oil draining out is causing failure from operating without pressure for a second. Just a random theory. No evidence but boy vehicles hate sitting.

Not for the first two times it happened. A week after we got the JTR my wife's daily driver got totaled (guy turned left out of a parking lot onto the main road after only looking to his right). So the JTR became her daily driver up until April this year. We put over 20k miles on it in the first year we had it, it never sat not driven for more than a two or three days.

Now, the usage model is that it sits for a week or two (on a trickle charger) then we go camping for a week where it gets driven every day.

If mine dumps I am screwed. I have so many $$$$ in mods and my time. Do the repairs solve the problem from happening again?

Jeep is hoping if they get enough ICE failures, everyone will want an EV. There's absolutely no excuse for this bullshit on a 13 year old design.

This is not a 13 year old design. The PUG came out in 2015 for the 2016 model year. There was not this sort of failure that I'm aware of on the 2016 -2019 model years.
So we're talking 8-9 years on this design. And of those years, the trouble seems to be more recent - 2020 being the worst.

Do the repairs solve the problem from happening again?
That's a huge "it depends". Who does the repairs, what gets replaced and more. No one can possibly say yes or no except for their specific vehicle.
