Not so for me - I like that I can drive sporty when I want to, but the rest of the time I drive very smoothly with a light foot. That is part of the beauty of driving manual. I enjoy different ways of driving different times. Getting high MPG is sort of a challenge.

Right now I have the MPG front and center on my instrument panel. I experiment with different gears at commonly driven speeds, watching how RPM, speed, and MPG interrelate. The instantaneous MPG usually hovers 28-32 MPG on level roads and constant speeds of 45-55 MPH.

I have not yet reset the MPG since taking delivery of the truck one month ago. It had 16 mi. on the odometer when rolled up to the showroom. The running average goes down to 18 after I have sat still for an hour running AC during lunch break, goes up to 19+ while on my commute of 21 mi one way (mostly "city"), goes up as high as 21 when I drive 35 miles to the next town and back on Interstate.
You are an exception. Sounds like how and why I like my SX4 T5 - I can drive like I'm 16 again, or I can push for upper 20s mpg. The former being more fun.........the latter for when my wife is with me.

I've noticed the exact same thing on the mpg "current" - on a level highway like in NW Iowa or a few around here, at about 55, I can watch the mpg hover around 30. WOW. So on the salt flats I could get some crazy mpg out of this!

Yes same I notice some drag with the top off but I guess that would be normal but if you have a soft top and the bun is sitting up top you can really feel it on the freeway.
You have a sail up there - makes total sense. Too bad that can't be made to drop back and lower your profile and not act like an open sail catching wind.

Thanks. I definitely need to look into those - I wonder if the dealer accessory guy was talking about a device like the Tazer - he said I could tune the speedometer for different tire sizes and mentioned some other stuff.
As for "throttle" I am very concerned about one thing -
I took my 1500 pound car hauler (an all aluminum tilt bed flat bed trailer that sits low and actually pulls pretty easy - didn't even feel it behind my 1/2 ton Chevy)
I took it to Omaha last winter - I80 in western Iowa. Not flat flat, but not crazy hills either.
The JT struggled badly. It got a whopping 11 mpg when normally I can do over 20 - 19 if I go 70+
It had trouble on hills, no power, transmission constantly hunted to make even what I call easy hills. I think it was gutless. And that was EMPTY trailer, no wind resistance.

This is my rig - empty going TO Omaha from Des Moines, then my load - 4 Rubicon take-off tires and wheels in the back (about 320 pounds) and some flat, light, plastic dealer signs on the trailer.
And that truck struggled - 11 mpg - trouble on hills.
So I wonder if one of those performance tweaks could help...........

I just got back yesterday from towing a Uhaul 6 x 12 trailer down to Galveston to pick up a stretch golf cart to get it out of the way of the Hurricane. Towed the trailer down empty and then loaded coming back. All mostly flat but some city driving. I averaged about 14.5 mpg. When I was on the interstate and tollway and able to get in the groove it towed no problems at all but the stop and go city part really ate up the MPG as the truck was constantly shifting all over the place due to the constant start/stop and slow down/speed up. I did not go over 65 mph. Mostly a mix of 55-65 mph.

Yes that would be nice maybe in the future someone will design one but doesn't look like anyone actively pursuing that. Shame cause it would likely be a big plus and sale for JEEP. The bun doesn't bug me and as of current I cannot see anytime in the current future that I would be putting the hard top back on. Maybe and that would be a big maybe if I was taking a long trip but am loving it to much having that top off. Some loss in mpg with the bun up is just going to have to be a trade off

If you cared all that much - we'd hear about you on the Tacoma forums LOL
Seriously, I know having the top off will cost me a small bit in mpg over time, but hey, I bought a truck, not a hybrid Toyota.

Top off, driving it hard, still beats any other truck I've owned for economy - that was an unexpected plus.

I am loving it and gave up my plus Ram 1500 for it. Always wanted a jeep but needed a truck now I got both and the family is loving it as well after initially thinking what they hell was I doing give up the plush truck for this small tank (LOL). I just got my Jpeggz mirrors in and now its time to figure out how to take the doors off as well.

Doors aren't too bad - my issue is stowing them so they don't get damaged or aren't in the way when trying to walk through my garage (note I say TRYING)
There's a couple of great videos out there - I did a youtube search and some are funny, others are short and sweet, but they show how to disconnect the wires and so on.
Yeah, amazing, I actually looked it up before I'll do it. But with temps and humidity in the upper 90s, doors on for a while unless I want to sweat all over the seats and need to carry a cooler of water anywhere I go. Next week temps go back down more normal.

You hit my reason for buying JT - I've always wanted a Jeep other than Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, etc. and didn't need a truck that wouldn't fit in my garage or even under my lean-to. JT fits.

stock JTR, no lift, and OEM tires? I think you have something wrong. Unless you drive up hill and into the wind both ways or don’t know how to shift your 6spd. Sure there are countless variables to MPGs but I think your results are too far outside the standard deviation.

disclaimer: I am not a mechanic, just some guy on the internet with an opinion.
Rubicon, 33" Falken MT the dealership put on. That's it. Interestingly enough it was up to 13.2 this morning.

Brand new, Max tow all stock, 21.1mpg hand calculated. About 250 miles of that was highway with some elevation cruise set at 75, I am impressed.
That is impressive, especially at 75 MPH. I would have expected a bigger hit with the 4.10 rears running at that speed.

Wow... that’s awesome.

my diesel canyon got 38mpg but if i hooked up to my tandem 16’ with a Honda pioneer I got 18mpg.

my sport gets 12 with empty trailer, rubi tires/wheels.

I’ll be lucky to get 15 minus trailer once I add the 35’s.

La.... flat land...d

Rats I can't touch that with my Overland pulling my EMPTY 1600 pound trailer on I80! I got a whopping 11-12 TOPS when trying - and I do mean TRYING, to maintain the 70 mph speed limit.
This and everything else I've seen tells me mine has some issues...........
You got 15 with a loaded trailer and I got 11-12 with an EMPTY flat bed - and mine had trouble on hills and couldn't decide what gear to be in.

I never seem to get what others are. I’m at 14.4 with my rubicon. I guess it must be the user and all the stop and go traffic.

That'll do it.
I happen to have an accessory that guarantees me better MPG on drives without my trailer......... it's called "wife". Install any place in the truck, especially behind the steering wheel, and I guarantee better mpg.
