Would I just top it up to right at the fill bolt threads on the housing? I see listed capacity but if I'm wanting to just maintain something close to full, without their being a capacity window/stick/etc., what say ye?
If I can reach it with the first joint of my little finger, it's good.
That's how we were taught, that's how each shop I worked at did it, up to the bottom of the fill hole was full, if you could touch it, it was ok.

Since you want it "topped off" then up to the bottom of the hole would be full.
You won't be in trouble if you can touch it with your little finger in the fill hole. The lube is tossed around by the ring gear so it has to be fairly low to be "too low". There's a reason the inside of the casting has the shape and passages that it does - it's to guide the fluid being "slung" by the ring gear to pinion bearings and so on. It's really being "slung about" at highway speeds.
People have asked why are the insides of the housings shaped or cast as they are, why are some covers shaped like they are - it's to guide the fluid being slung by the ring gear.

Just got a call back from Jeep. Currently they have them listed under engineering review, they’ve blocked ordering them. He said back orders are one thing but in his experience, when flagged as under engineering review, it usually means a new solution is forthcoming.
Well that's something besides my engine tick that's the only other issue I have so if they can get that fixed eventually I'll just have to hope this tick gets bad enough before my warranty runs up ?

@ShadowsPapa thanks again for the assist. It was low enough to where I couldn’t feel it with my pinky. It ended up taking about half a quart to bring it up to just below the threads.
You didn't hurt anything, but it was time to add - especially with any leak.
Good job - checking and making sure.

2,000 miles later on the loaner cherokee, I finally picked up my truck.

Dropped of 2/12 picked up 3/23.
Evidently and not surprised, it took more than a month to get the axle assembly.

Parts replaced:
68474058AB - Axle service rear
68471168AA - Axle shaft
6833869AE - Axle hose vent
And oil of course
Well, mines leaking again.
Going back to the dealer for the 3rd time. Going to call first thing tomorrow morning.

Going to tell the service dept to give 68474094-AA a shot assuming its a part that works for my JT that is.

Edit: Leak this time around is worse than the first 2 times.

After having the second housing replaced, I could hear a slight "clunking" sound anytime I stopped then started driving again. And I've never heard it before, So when I got home I crawled under the truck just to look over everything. Then I found this gem right here

I was towing a camper home from storage, to go camping 3 hours away. Luckly my oldest got sick an hour before we were going to leave. So that's when I crawled under there to take a look. God was looking out for us for sure!

So i picked it up 3/28, and i drove it home and parked it. Since im getting rid of it, ive been driving my DD anywhere i go to keep the miles off of it and to try to keep it from leaking again. My lawyer is going back and forth with FCA so i cant do anything until thats settled. So ive drove it 3 or 4 times but ive only put around 70 miles on it since it was replaced. I found this on 4/7

HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!
Seriously? Imagine tooling down the interstate in heavy traffic at 70 mph and that baby let loose.............
At least full driveshaft destruction, possible t-case damage, who knows what else, not to mention the safety factor.
Say no more- keep it between you and attorney. This is beyond nuts.

That's scary I had the same symptom when I dropped off for my axle repair. Brought it up and never heard anything about them fixing it but the sound has been gone ever since...

Not a lawyer but what are the realistic chances of financial compensation for something that "could" have happened but did not?

Sounded like he had other things going BUT maybe I read that wrong......... this is just something that may, or may not, play into the grand picture if there were other issues.
No financial compensation but if there's a question that there were past screw-ups that caused damage, etc. or that they've not been able to fix things, if there's any question as to blame - this is a "add it to their history of incompetence".

I'd also be saving the pictures as if there's something goes wrong in the future, and he's denied warranty because of damage to bolts, flange, whatever - here's proof it was the dealership screwed up.
They not only didn't torque those bolts, they didn't even bother to tighten any of the bolts to "snug".
