This is the axle pulled out. Grease is used before it is pul together and their will be a bit left in the tube. there will be dark black stuff all over in the housing and tubes.

on the narrow axles I have some information on. I was unable to source new bearings but I could find seals. They are like $8 each. Several online vendors list wrangler axles as fitting. They do not, the bearings on a gladiator rear axle use a larger bearing. It measure around 3.15 inches. Timkens catalog is 700 pages long and I didn’t have time in attempt to decode everything

bearings timken Np703537 , race Np503480
seals Dana part 10026762
Parrking brake shoes Z941 or just 941…..mopar uses these on multiple other vehicles

i ended up ordering a replacement axle to get me back on the road. One day I’ll source a bearing and have a trail spare

Yeah, that's pretty much as I've posted or said before - the bearings are pre-lubed, packed if you will, similar to the way car front wheel bearings are. So there will be grease inside - on/in the bearing and in the axle tube, but nothing outside.
The grease the bearings are installed with has nothing to do with any "grease" found on the outside. There will be bits of it in the tube and on the bearing if you disassemble it - pull the axle out of the housing.

The configuration is the same basic configuration used with Dana axles for decades - only the size of the bearings has changed and a slight change in the seal configuration - it has a spacer on the outboard side of the seal that presses against it instead of the retainer itself (the part with the 4 studs) pressing and holding the seal in place.
Look at the ribs on the outside of the seal, it's just like seals of the past.

Bearing retainer ring, bearing, seal, seal spacer/retainer ring, retainer (with 4 studs) and these have a dust shield - thin small steel ring on the washer between retainer and tone ring.

Nothing magical or different or unique or strange about it - other than the fact they leak.

They are replacing pads, rotors (both sides despite only the passenger’s being affected) but parts won’t be available till mid May but that’s an estimate. He said according to a seminar one of their techs attended last week in Philly, a new axle solution is estimated to hit in June. He said they are shifting to a modular design like the older axles where if a seal fails, they can easily address it vs having to swap it all out.

Side note, if you have a dealership close that you trust, get your wave change in, or at least grab a filter, even if slightly premature. No oil filters locally (covered in another post) they sent for a filter clear out to Mount Pocono where they have a whopping two yet agreed to part with one. That’s a two hour trip so I return tomorrow for my last of 3 wave changes. I’ve got 2 changes worth of Mopar oil and a single Mopar filter in my garage that I grabbed last year.

He was visibly deflated, it’s clear he’s had to convey a lot of bad news for who knows how long. As it stands, if a glady owner were to come here for a simple rotor and pad or oil change, they wouldn’t be able to service them. I felt like I should pick up lunch or something for the poor guy.

Sounds like a service advisor I talked with 2 visits ago - the guy really wanted to talk and unload regarding all of the problems getting help, getting parts, waiting, said they had 30 vehicles out back that they were waiting on parts for, Ram trucks, Jeeps of all sorts, some there since January and at that time that was over 2 months. He said they were short handed, parts on backorder, and then the scheduling service they use double-booked them for days and no one caught it fast enough so people were getting PO'd and blaming anyone and everyone they saw so the service advisors were taking the brunt of the anger because they were the front line, the first people seen when you get out of the vehicle at the shop entrance.

Yeah, after all of it he said he does have a fancy programmable TPMS sensor in stock that can be set to any frequency which would allow my full spare (currently mounted as part of my 5 tire rotation cycle) to not throw a code. The code is annoying but I didn’t even mention anything. He said he’d do it for their part cost only. I thanked him and took him up on the discounted part offer but insisted they charge me for labor. Lots of good people here trying to do the best they can.

On the rotor above and below the pad path? That's a lot.
Yes, the bearings would likely be greased to provide lube before the lube in the housing gets to them.
I've always used a grease on axle bearings that are lubed by the hypoid gear oil in the differential. Otherwise they start out dry and have no lube until the gear oil gets to them.

There should be no lube of any sort on the rotor, and he's talking a fair amount.
Received a note from Customer Care saying engineering released the leaking seal part and it should be ready by the end of the week. I guess this will also include the TSB. Guess I'll continue to hurry up-n-wait.

So there is officially a fix now then?

After getting the ESS fixed with a new aux battery I'm looking the truck over because they left the fender liner screws
hanging by a thread. (made another post about that) . And there's a wheel vibration at 70 since they rotated the
tires . I'm glad I did.

Jeep Gladiator Leaking axle seal? 20220418_141822

I remember when I first read about this
issue here months ago I checked things over and all was fine . 3000 miles ,
now 7000 .
Doesn't look like it's been leaking for long or I'm thinking the whole rim would
be coated . Called a different dealer than the one that did the aux battery 2
hours ago and of course got voice-mail.
Waiting for a call back.
My question is, will they let or want me
to drive it till they can fix it ?
Expect a rental if they don't want me to drive it while maybe waiting on parts ?
Wait for an updated fix ?
Looks like I'm doomed to have all the
common issues. Not sure what the next likely problem might be .
I still love this truck .
How does this look compared to others ?

If Stellantis was a half way decent company, they should issue a special warranty extension on the rear axles until whatever in sequence "fix" they come up with.

It's not leaking bad enough to not drive it.
Don't expect a rental - Jeep Wave does cover first day rental if one is available.
The updated fix is a must and dealers can't even order parts until the update is out. (like maybe in a week or so? Sounds like the engineered fix is coming soon, we hope. )

Is there a TSB I can refer my dealer to make this repair?

I'm back in on the list with a 2022, at 2,635 miles.
