voltage output on my 115VAC outlet in the back seat is 95 volts! This is definitely a problem. Any one else check their voltage levels? I've barely used the outlet so I'm sure I didn't blow the inverter. thoughts?

I don't imagine the output of the 400W inverter is a sine wave: it probably looks more like a square wave. Your meter won't read accurately unless it's measuring a sine wave.

Mine works, so I never measured the voltage. I use it to charge the battery pack I connect the fridge to while traveling.

What this guy said. Need a true RMS spec multi-meter. That Klein meter shown is just measuring the peak to peak voltage and averaging a result and assuming it is sinusoidal.

That being said, what is shown is about what I would expect with that device.

duh, that makes perfect sense. My multimeter leads are too big to fit in the plugs. Anyone have an oscilloscope then can hook to the outlet and post a screen shot of the waveform?

I got similar readings - 91 Volts; Only after hooking up Oscilloscope to see a modified square wave output did things make sense.

I just checked my inverter with a true RMS meter and it says 92.6V. Not good. The frequency is also a bit off (61HZ) which will impact things that reference to line frequency like old VCRs, turntables and probably some newer stuff.

For easy AC line measurements you really need a 2 prong to binding post adapter. Ooh, I need to clean my rear cup holders!

oh shit that's the adapter I need. I've got the Fluke 87V which looks like the direct comparable to that HP.

Yeah, I'm sure it's the way these DMMs integrate that noisy squarewave. same with the freq, if it's confused by the spikes.

oh yeah I just went back and saw the OP in the o-scope thread calculated using p-p and came really close to 120

I’ve had this adapter for many years and don’t remember where I got it. I just did a search for anything similar and nothing comes up. I thought they were a little more common.

It could make a good gift for an unruly child.

that adapter is only available in a bin of banana plugs in the back of an old shop!

I just found Klein makes one but I'm not testing enough receptacles to justify it

You might be able to make this work.

Unidapt US Canada Mexico Travel Plug Adapter, European to US Plug Adapter, Universal Outlet Adapters, 2-Pack EU to US Adaptor, Europe to USA, Type A Pin Converter, Black https://a.co/d/gBvSfT2

HP 972A specifications say it is still a average responding calibrated to display RMS. It is not really a True RMS calibrated for Sinewave which the HP 973A is. So I am not surprised you got the 92.6 volt measurement with it.

The HP manual claimed reasonable RMS accuracy but apparently it’s not the right meter. This one is specifically for measuring AC power circuits and is true RMS. I see it’s not a square wave but a modified step square wave.
