It’s not just on Jeep products. My Ford f150 with chrome covers or stainless covers were the same problems. I have replaced the lug nuts on all vehicles with solid stainless or anodized lug nuts. Problem solved. It is annoying if you happen to have to change a flat on the trail or road. Powder coated gives you the same problem.
Same on my wife’s Cadillac CTS.

Can you post pictures of these lug nuts?

For my Mojave (Black, and It needs a bath), I went with this set of (20) all spline lug nuts, basically all locking lug nuts from Gorilla Automotive (96643BDX).

(20) black spline locking lug nuts for every wheel lug, for Stock wheels.

Went to go rotate my tires for the first time last weekend and for the love of God, what size are these lugs?

FYI they are the factory jacketed nuts and they WERE undamaged.

I know the book says 22mm, which is what I tried to use. It's almost like they used a 22mm nut, and THEN put the steel jacket over it. I have to hammer a 22mm on. I tried the next up and down SAE sizes and they didn't fit right. I thought that maybe the two 22mm sockets I have are cheap, or wrong, or whatever, so I ordered a new name-brand 22mm impact socket, and same thing - had to hammer it on. 23mm is way too big.

Thing is, I then tried the factory lug wrench, and same thing! I pretty much had to hammer that one on.

As if rotating your tires isn't enough of a pain, do you know how much longer it takes to knock the socket on each lug, then have to knock it back out again? Every single one?

So that makes 3 22mm sockets, multiple other metric and SAE sockets, AND the factory lug wrench that are the wrong size!

Anyone else run into this?
I’m having the exact same issue with the lug nuts on my Overland. Tried 22mm, 7/8”, nothing quite fits.

I also noticed that the lug nuts could spin about 10-20 degrees with just my fingers.

To-date, I’ve only had the dealership rotate my tires. I am taking the front right wheel off today to replace what I suspect to be a failing wheel speed sensor. Now I’m wondering if the jeep techs have just been hammering their 22mm on everytime—if that’s the case, I’m hopingmy wheel speed sensor issues isn’t actually a wheel hub issue.

I’m off to try to get a 23mm deep socket, and will just end up replacing all of the lugs one way or another today…

Well, I ended up hammering on the 22mm socket and my breaker bar (even with a 4’ pipe) couldn’t get them to budge.

I’ll hit it with the impact gun on Saturday.

I have removed wheels before, but not many and not on my Gladiator. This seems weird to me, though:

Take it from a guy that has owned 4 JT's and a JL, the wheel studs and lug nut threads are very prone to galling if the lug nuts are not hand started gently and properly torqued. My money is the dealership techs just sent it on nuclear setting with their impacts.

I would be keeping it in the back of your mind that you will be needing a new set of lug nuts and probably wheel studs. I have had good luck with Dorman 610-615 wheel studs and can be bought in packs of 10ea for a decent pricing. I went through this on my 2021 JT when I let the dealership do all the Jeep Wave service.

Also, chasing the threads with a thread chaser or tap/die is only going to buy you a temporary reprieve before they start to galling again real soon.

Agree. On my Bauer impact I remove on setting 3 but install on setting 1 after hand snugging. Then torque to 130ft/lbs. I have one lug bolt on my driver’s rear that is slightly sticky.

I try to use power tools as little as possible on pretty much anything if it can be done by hand. Absolutely hate trying to get bolts and filters and anything off a vehicle after it’s been at a mechanic. Most times they use nothing but power tools. Chaps my adz every time.
