Yes, but if I'm not mistaken, the warranty only applies when you use the Magnuson tune regardless of who turns the wrenches.
That's how I understand it, but with the rumors of catalytic converters burning out, I'm worried about doing it at all. Lots of variables I'm juggling and really kinda torn...

If you feel more comfortable with a warranty or need a warranty, then I am not your guy. If your looking for the cleanest install with a factory like high performance tune, then I am your guy. I am reminded of the Tommy Boy quote though.?

Dave:
Would you be willing to travel to different parts of the country to do the installs, or would everyone have to come to you? There were a couple of guys offering specialty services like this in the land cruiser community who would travel and bundle several installs on the same trip- seemed to be popular.

Coming from a risk perspective… I’d either want a professional install with someone who has a GL policy that covers negligence - likely E&O OR just take all the risk of doing it myself. That way if it gets screwed up I can file against their insurance or blame myself. Even with a contract - you can’t eliminate all negligence claims if you are taking money to complete a job. Given the cost of install+a new engine you are likely looking at 25k or more if something goes wrong.

I don't know, but it seems to me that anyone risk averse enough to prioritize warranty/liability/insurance/etc. wouldn't be the 'type' to supercharge an(y) engine in the first place....

Possibly…
But everyone makes mistakes, and when working with high-value items, one honest mistake could be ruinous.
Some sort of insurance is a must, especially in our litigious society.

Pretty confident I would not make a mistake, but that argument is the exact reason I am not pushing hard to do this or make a business out of it. My day job trusts me with the programming project that allows a haul truck as big as a house to drive by itself. So this type of stuff if fun and pretty straightforward to me.

As far as doing the work. I would be willing to travel to tune, and every once in a while I do so. The mechanical work I would want to do at my shop. I have fabrication tools, shop air, heating and cooling, food, music, and lots of power tools.

Dave,
I've worked as a project manager and program manager on some large projects. Detailed contracts are ALWAYS a good idea even if they are informal because they set expectations and avoid situations where the vendor has one set of expectation and the customer another set of expectations. Explicit details avoid misunderstandings.

Some stuff off the top of my head is.

1) what are you responsible if the motor / transmission / transfer case / etc blows up within X number of days/weeks/months of install?
2) what are you responsible for if the supercharger blows up within X number of days/months/weeks of install
3) Are you responsible for any other related functions since you do have to remove a lot of stuff for the install?

4) is the owner responsible to bring the truck to you for any follow up?
5) I know very little about the Jeep ECU, but seem to vaguely remember that the tune can change over time as it learns. If the tune gets funky, will you reflash it with a new tune? If yes, for how long?
What if the dealer re-flashes it back to stock?
5.5) customer understands and acknowledges that this installation may cause a dealer to deny warranty claims on any parts of the drivetrain.
5.6 - if any claims against Magnusson's warranty on their supercharger or the jeep drivetrain (I believe they warrant your engine) whose responsibility is it to manage it. To make phone calls etc. How much will they pay you to manage the warranty claim if you do it?

6) Vendor responsibilities -
  • install supercharger,
  • leave the vehicle clean, garage vehicle if its kept overnight.
  • Not responsible if vandalized.
  • Acts of god.
  • Will scan vehicle before customer leaves to confirm no unresolved issues

7) Customer responsibilities.
  • Vehicle is insured to its full value with deductible of no more than X.
  • Vehicle gas tank is filled with premium gas with receipt left in the truck.
  • recent oil analysis provided showing no issues.
  • Vehicle has received an oil change using XX oil within 1000 miles of drop off.

Even if its not presented as a contract. Lets call it a disclaimer that the client doesn't need to sign, it helps to avoid misunderstanding and is a good thing for both you and the client. Its important that the client know exactly what you expect to provide.

I hope this helps.

This is a good start. Definitely along the lines of what I was thinking.

Great. I'm happy to help in any way possible. Oh yeah. Never call it a contract. That frightens people. Call it a Magnusson Supercharger installation agreement. Or something like that.

Might of come up with a solution for the liability that is more straight forward. There is a local shop in town that I frequent, they said they would be willing to hire me for this work.

Check if this is even legal in your State. In CA you'd need to be licensed by the BAR.

@DAVECS1

I am very impressed with the effort and dedication you put into your tuning. Instead of doing installs. Why not patent your tuning, send them to Magnuson, get them approved / licensed to be used, and sell the maps?

I bet there would be a decent amount of ppl interested and willing to pay for a better tune. (I know I would)

I worked with Magnuson for a while and have freely shared my tunes with them. They are not comfortable with transmission changes and the number of changes I believe are required to get it to the level of performance I prefer
