What does offset mean? What is backspace? Thanks in advance.
The easy way for me to think offset is that 0 offset is the hub of the wheel is centered in the rim. A positive offset movs the rim in from the hub and a negative offset moves the rim out.
A positive offset will keep the wheel and tire from sticking out as much. The stock Rubicon is a +44 offset and keeps the 33" tire pretty much inside the

In MA the tires can stick out up to 2". More than that the gendarmes can nab you. Tho they seem to ignore it lately. Seems like every other pick up truck on the road has tires sticking out.
Where did you see that up to 2” is allowed? I was always told they couldn’t stick out at all when getting my yearly inspection

I am about to order my jeep gladiator and was wondering what is the bigest tire sizes I can put. It will be a Mojave so I am not lifiting, but wanted the tires to stand out, wider than the car… thought about offset the wheels to achieve that look, but what is the max? Thanks!
37/13.5/18 Cooper stt Pros, Motiv Glock wheels +18mm offset, no lift kit. Kept the stock spare.

I was told 35s without having to do anything extra. I’ve read on this forum that 37s will fit but it’s tight. For what it’s worth, your spare tire well underneath the bed will only accommodate a tire up to a 35”.
You can keep the stock spare hence the word “differential”

Thats a really bad idea if you plan to use 4 wheel drive, or do more than limp very slowly out of harms way to wait for help. You’ll cook your differential if you drive at speed with different size tires.

Car manufactures have been using space saver spare tires for years. The diff will function normally. Where did you get that idea from?

I’m not sure what the “up hill to school” comment was about, other than potentially an attempt at an ad hominem attack based on an assumption that I’m “old”. I’m not by the way, but that’s irrelevant to the point at hand.

Car manufacturers have been using space saver spare tires for years, and they work just fine on a non-drive axle on a 2WD car. Many modern AWD vehicles actually disable the AWD clutch when they detect a different size tire on one wheel. Space savers are designed to let you limp to a repair shop.

Every vehicle with a space saver spare also tell you to drive at 50mph or below when running it.

Running a different size tire on one wheel also messes with traction control and ABS calculations.

Look at it this way: if it didn’t matter then why didn’t Jeep put a smaller tire under the Gladiator? You can’t see it and it would save them money. Also, if it didn’t matter then why do AWD vehicle manufacturers tell you specifically that if you have to replace a damaged tire and your tires have more than superficial wear you must replace all 4 at once, not just the damaged one?

The differential does allow a difference in size, but that difference in rotation speed is translated to heat.

So again, yeah, you can run a different size if you’re only planning to slowly limp out of trouble.

I have a stock Mojave on 37””s
On the highway from Vegas to LA, 580 mile round trip, i average 18.1 mpg, verified from the actual gallons used. As a daily city driver around Las Vegas, roughly 300 miles, my average is 14.9. I have 15,000 miles on the truck as of today. So to say you only get 10 mpg suggests you Have mechanical issues or other underlying issues.

I have an Overland, just got it. Came with 255 70 R18. I put on some Michelins LT295 70 R18 with Synergy 1-3/4-Inch Hub Centric Wheel Spacers. Looks great, sticks out nice, no rubbing! Used my ECRI calibrator for the new tire size. Unfortunately the spare does not fit. I need a same size spare to get over sand permits where I want to go. I need to start looking into a hitch mounted spare tire carrier. Will be making a new thread.
Not sure why these don't fit.. the 35/11.50 Toyos which measure 34.5" diameter fit in my spare area. You might try lower PSI .. Tight fit but good to go.

I have a non lifted Mojave on 37x13.5x20 Toyo Open country MT’s… not sure what my offset is, but it’s significant, as my wheels stick out a good 4-6 inches past the fenders. Looks awesome, however my tires weigh 91 lbs each, so I’m getting 10 mpg. You really have to consider tread pattern, and tire/wheel weight if you’re concerned about MPG. I’m tossing on 35x12.5x20’s soon in an AT tire to hopefully get some ride quality and MPG back. The 37’s look awesome, but I’ve been daily driving my Mojave and I need to make some sacrifices for real world usability. Selling my lightly used 37’s in Pennsylvania if anyone wants them.

I like the tires. But your offset means nothing without what the rim width is. A 8" and a 9" rims with the same offset will have different backspacing.

The reason why you didn't want to drive over 50 mph. The space saver tires are not speed rated for over 50 mph, and not constructed for mileage over 70 miles.

Actually since offset is based off the centerline of the wheel, it is the same for all wheel widths. Yes the backspace will be different. The real issue is the distance from the tire to the suspension components. My wheels are 9” wide, +18 mm offset, with a 13.5” wide tire. Go to tiresize.com and use their offset visualizer/converter. It will show you how you new tire/wheel setup compairs to your factory set up.
