Gut says "what were they thinking?????"
Brain said - they weren't.

My grandfather used to take me out to the Milwaukee Road tracks and roundhouse area on the west side of the town where I grew up. We'd sit and watch trains for an hour or two. I was probably 8 or so at the time but I sure remember being with him watching the trains. They weren't going fast.
Almost all crossings at that time were simple, stop sights or maybe signals, no barricades. You did the right thing.

In Ames, iowa, the trains go so fast through town there'd be nothing left if they hit you, or if there was, the remains would be a mile down the track. I mean they sail through that city - FAST. But it's flat and straight. If you can see the train at all, you don't stand a chance.

Bro, I know this might sound wrong, but I almost wish it would happen again so I could get better footage! Lol maybe a longer video to walk around the back of the trailer to show the damage. Actually keep the camera up focused on the accident. Damn...once in a lifetime and I could have done better. I honestly don't remember much about what I was thinking. It was just "oh no...oh shit! I better move!"

Yes they contacted me for permission. Didn't offer any money though.
I would have been inclined to tell them to get their own video if they are not willing to forward a little Jeep money your way.

I grew up in a rail town. Two rail lines had big yards / facilities there (the AT&SF was the larger of the two, but the M-K-T was nearly as big). Rail crossing impacts were a very common event, so much so that unless there was a death, nothing made the local news. There was one impact that still sticks in my mind - a cattle truck tried to beat a train to the crossing and lost. Several head were killed, but many, many, many got loose and ran through the neighborhoods. Truly a bizarre experience.

Very glad you, the truck driver, or any member of the train crew weren’t seriously injured.
