The Sport does not normally come with rails/steps etc. It may have been an option (I forget) but the most basic, stripped down Sport does not.

Lots of aftermarket options are available as well as OEM take offs. I have a set of Rubi rail take offs but CT is a bit far from NC.
optional even on Overland.
Overland used to come with the "running boards" but when I ordered in May 2022, they were optional, not standard.
Dealer pointed that out.

but cuts down on mud and rocks getting thrown up.
BIG Amen to that. I've got pictures of what it would be like without running boards or something on the sides - those front wheels really mess up the sides of the truck with salt, snow, sand, mud, ROCKS, etc..

I don’t even think the steps are standard on the later model Overlands and Wrangler Saharas like they used to be, but are now a few hundred dollar option.

Willys, Rubicon, and Mojave I believe all come standard with sliders.
As of when I ordered my 2022 in May of 2022, the running boards were an option. You could get them or other rails as I recall.
When I ordered my 2020 - they were standard on Overland.
As my wife would say "not no more!"

If you're not doing any four wheeling that would rip off side steps, the factory running boards work well. I chose them over aftermarket steps because they fill in the gap at the front fender, serving as kind of a mudflap/stone guard. I had some major rock chips on my rear door hinges after the first few days of ownership with the factory rock rails. None since installing the running boards.

It is going to come down to what your window sticker and more accurately the build sheet says your vehicle was built to.
The window sticker doesn't mention them; I just assumed (incorrectly) that it would list only extra cost upgrades with the basic ones simply being included.
Don't spend much time worrying. Just buy some cheap takeoffs.
That's the plan, depending on what I can find.

That's what I was thinking. My hardcore rockcrawling days ended with the sale of my CJ5, nowadays I mainly just need to get in to our cabin regardless of the road conditions.

Another question: Are they all interchangeable across different model years?

yes.
For example, the running boards from my 2022 Overland would fit a 2020 Sport or a 2023 Rubicon or whatever.

New guy here... just took delivery of a new 2023 Sport. I got the most stripped down version I could find, even down to hand cranked windows, had to drive to a dealer in another state to get it.

Anyway, it didn't come with side steps or running boards or anything, just the pinch edge with holes where it attaches. One of the dealer guys said they weren't included with the basic Sport package and I dismissed it as lots of aftermarket stuff is available. Then forgot to ask again as it was a long day, and they're closed today.

I know there are other fancier ones available as options and I'll likely go that way, but surely there should be some basic version already there, no?
Too bad you didn't`live near Albany NY.I took off the running boards that came on my Overland that I recently bought.I am going to list them on Market Place For $100.00

Well, more looking, maybe I don't want stock rails... it sounds like they don't have much of a step, I may need more of a step for my 5'0" wife.

RSE Power steps like I installed - pricy, but nice and multi-purpose.
There are many options.
The Overland used to come with running boards - those are helpful.
My wife is about 5'6" and with her handicap can't reach high (limited arm length/use) so power steps were necessary for our Jeeps.
But there's a lot of options out there that are steps and rails and whatever.

I do recommend something or the side of that truck will be a mess in short order.

Yes, my wife has a bad hip and needed a step to get in. My knees aren’t the greatest either and I think it will be helpful from time to time.

Do these fit the contour of the JT or are they straight? My Wife has been begging me to put something with drop step on mine, but everything i've looked at sticks out either front, back, or both.
They are straight bars, but there is no gap in the front and a very small gap in the rear. I was able to push it in pretty tight in the rear so you really don’t notice the slight gap. I’ll shoot a close up photo today and post it.

If you like the OEM rock rail look, but need them a couple inches wider, You could get the “Performance rock rails” that are wider than the standard ones.
