It's basically just to keep you from accidentally locking the keys in. Like with proximity locks, how you just touch the door handle, or with power locks, you press the lock button on the inside of the door when you get out (or at least that's how I've always done it). If you use the key fob button, you'll never have the issue. But I always use the door button or the prox lock on the handle.
Got it. So it's a preventative measure for something that requires a very specific series of events to happen, as normal use of the key and doors wouldn't allow it to happen in the first place. Because you can't hit the door lock button on the inside and have it lock you out, and if you did then it unlocks as soon as you open the door anyway, nor can the prox locks work without the key on the outside of the vehicle.

I guess, depending on what normal is for you. I don't ever take the key out of my pocket when in the JT, so when this happens, it means the key fell out of my pocket and I didnt notice it. Or in the JKU, my wife locks the Jeep with the power lock button in the vehicle, rather than the keyfob, so she's locked her keys in a few times.

So you always use the key to lock it? Never use the power locks switch in the Jeep?

Power locks when I'm inside it. But if the door is open and I try to hit "lock" on the door, it won't try to lock the doors. Just tried it again, it only tries to lock when the door is closed.

Interesting. Mine will, and the JKU definitely will. For those of you with this, on the JT, you can override this, by hitting lock 3 times, if you just really want to lock the keys in.

I'm experimenting with figuring out being able to lock the jt with the key in / on / under it. We sometimes go camping previously I would stash my jku keys in / under the jeep so they aren't in the woods "somewhere" if they fall out of my pocket....

I believe I need to figure out signal blocking box... not a huge deal but I don't want to be looking for the key along the last hiking trail....
Here is one way to do this. Knock the pin out of the key so it is separated from the fob. Now you can use a hide a key, or zip ties, or whatever, to hide just the key on the outside of your Gladiator. The key only unlocks the door. Put your fob in a “fob faraday bag” and hide the fob real good inside your Gladiator. Now you can hike nude if you want, only thing you would have to carry is sunblock. Don’t ask.

No, it's the only part that does NOT unlock automatically, which is why that's the only time I touch the fob.
Ah, ok... I misread that completely! When you put "Auto Unlock" in parentheses I thought it was a feature you could turn on... and I don't have that setting, just "Passive Entry". Thanks for clarifying!

It might be a manual thing ?
I can confirm that I can lock my doors with the key fob outside the vehicle while the engine is running just as if it was shut off. I have the ecodiesel and auto trans and do this all the time in the winter if the engine isn't to temp yet while I am out.

Can the horn honking 3 times be shut off? I got home at 2am and had to move the garbage can out of the driveway and the horn went off since I had the key in my pocket, if the jeep is running it will sound the horn too. Cant always remember to put the key in the jeep then get out.
In settings menu. Within first two days, I disabled it. I'm a night owl so it's bad enough when I bump the panic button in pocket working at night.

It may depend on which radio group you have I've got the 5in screen option one. Menu then scroll through options. Kinda a good thing to do to get to know the vehicle too.

In the owner's manual around page 414 (on 5in screen for 2020 models) explains radio settings it should be around there.
