Looking for current local trail advice for Friday June 12.

I’m trying to plan a one-night or weekend trip around North GA, ideally close to Clayton, GA / Rabun County / Hiawassee / Blairsville.

Group logistics:

  • I’m coming from Charlotte, NC.
  • Friends are coming from Chattanooga, TN.
  • Brother is coming from Clermont, GA.
  • Clayton, GA seems like the best central area.
  • I’d like to keep my drive around 3 to 3.5 hours max.

Rig:

  • 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon
  • 4” ReadyLIFT Terrain Flex Max 4-arm kit
  • Falcon 2.1 shocks
  • 37” Falken Wildpeak AT3s
  • 20” Black Rhino Abrams wheels
  • Full-size spare
  • Currently having some weird locker sensor issues, so I do not want a route where lockers are mandatory.

What I’m looking for:

  • Legal trail or route, MVUM-legal or clearly open
  • Current open/traversable as of June 2026
  • Around 7/10 difficulty
  • My scale: 5/10 means a stock 4x4 with decent clearance should make it. I want something above that, where a stock Gladiator Rubicon starts to feel limited, but not so hard I’m risking body damage or drivetrain damage.
  • Water access nearby or along the route, creek, river, waterfall, or good running water
  • Secluded camping, dispersed or low-density preferred
  • Not looking for a crowded campground or easy gravel road
  • Also not looking for illegal closed spurs or anything that gets the area shut down

Routes I’m trying to validate:

  • Charlie’s Creek
  • Beasley Knob, but only moderate lines, not the worst trails
  • Warwoman / Sarah’s Creek area
  • Tray Mountain / Indian Grave Gap
  • Cooper Creek / Suches
  • Any other Clayton-area route locals would recommend

Main questions:

  1. What is actually open and legal right now?
  2. Which route best fits a 7/10 trail without requiring lockers?
  3. Is Charlie’s Creek currently passable in a long-wheelbase Gladiator on 37s?
  4. Is Beasley worth it for this trip, or too risky with locker sensor issues and possible rain?
  5. Best water-access camping nearby?
  6. Any specific trail sections to avoid in a Gladiator?
  7. Any recent washouts, gates, deadfall, or ranger closures?

I’m not asking for anyone’s secret spot. General route names, current condition reports, and “go / no-go” advice would help a lot.

Thanks.

There are a lot of trails in Beasley knob. There is even some primitive camping. It can suffer from closures if it rains too much. During the week it will likely be pretty dead, weekend probably not. If it is dry you should be able to do everything with the rigs you mentioned. If it is wet there are probably some trails that are not likely to happen because of slippery boulders. I don't think you will have enough trails to keep you busy for more than one day, obviously depends on conditions. If it is slippery and you have to winch the rigs that consumes a lot of time.
Maybe others that are from that area can add more insight. We spent a good 5 hours hitting trails and had a blast but we did not hit everything because of slippery boulders and we had to winch a bit on other slippery slopes. Definitely worth your time to check it out. Can't comment on the other spots.
Have fun.

Except for the ORV parks, all the trails I have been on in N Georgia have been on public roads. All of the are passable in a stock Jeep. Some of them have not been maintained recently and you may have to negotiate large ruts. Charlie's Creek is the most popular spot for Wheelers/Campers and will be great fun in your Gladiator. Go north on 441 from Clayton to Dillard, turn left on Betty's Creek Rd, go ~4 miles and turn left on Patterson Gap Rd., follow Patterson's Gap across the mountain and you come out on where it becomes Persimmon Gap Rd., go ~ 1.5 miles and turn right on Tallulah River Rd, go 3.8 miles and look on the left for the river ford that starts Charlie's Creek Rd. Follow Charlie's Creek Rd and it becomes Hightower Rd, crosses the Appalachian Trail, goes down a long hill, and turns paved at the bottom of the hill. Follow the paved road to US 76 ~5 miles east of Hiawassee.

The smokey Mountains 500 and the Chattahoochee BDR use Charlie's Creek Rd on their routes. Both rides show a lot of other nearby places to explore. If you have the capability, you can download gpx files from the ride sites. That would make the navigation easy. Popcorn Creek Rd is on the BDR and it can be challenging in the wet. On Charlie's Creek, the river ford is easy, but the entrance/exits are not visible from the start of the ford. From the east side, go into the river and straight across for 2/3 of the width of the crossing, then turn 90° to the right and ride the sandbar by Charlie's Creek to the exit just on the other side of the creek. Even if you miss the "correct" path, the crossing is still easy. It's just deeper. Do not stop in the water for photos.
