Ran into something similar years ago with a Goodyear tire store. They treated dropping a spare down as shop labor rate and not fixed service rate.

Did they actually charge that much to mount the spare?

I know each DT is different but mine rotates tires for free even if you didn’t buy from them.. They have also patched a tire of mine for free without buying the tire there. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky with them, but so far all great experiences, I think they’ll make it right for you.

I have to say, I don’t think they “sucker” anyone into buying a tire certificate. We are adults and we make adult decisions.

Speaking from experience the certificates have paid for themselves a few times on our vehicles.

Speaking for your situation, wouldn’t you rather spend $35 on a certificate and get a new tire if there is another non-fixable issue rather than another 300-500 tire?

Not a Jeep gladiator post, but my wife limped into our local Discount Tire with a flat on her 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L with 5000 miles on it. She had a screw that was too close to the sidewall to patch. Pirelli Scorpion Verde tire in 265/50/20. They charged her $507.75 for a new tire and it wouldn't be available until Monday 4/7 and they put her full-size spare tire on it for her. I was gone for the weekend and didn't have a chance to help her out. and give her advice on what to say.

After she told me the cost, I was like Bullshit, that tire is not a $500 dollar tire. After going on Discount tires website, its a $304 dollar tire.. Even after they sucked her into paying extra for the "lifetime warranty" certificate which is $39.20 , the total comes out to $390.15 mounted, balanced, and out the door pricing. No where near the $507.75 they charged her.

Yes, they did her a favor of putting her full-size spare tire on the vehicle so she could keep driving the jeep over the weekend, but to charge her an extra $117.60 dollars is insane. I have bought probably 10 sets of tires from this particular store for them to take advantage of a woman is horrible.

I plan on taking her Jeep GC tomorrow to get the new tire installed and asking why the cost is so much. Depending on their response, it will affect my decision to keep buying tires from Discount Tire. I was ready to buy a set of 37's for my jeep this week as my 35's are about worn out, I don't know if I will or not.

Discount tire price matches. It should be very easy and no fight.

They have always been good to me when I go in there. They even fixed a flat on my riding tractor for free.

However, I don't buy certificates for lease vehicle tires. The vehicles I own, yes. This is the first tire in my wife's 40 years of driving that has ever had a non fixable tire.

Yeah, that's out of character for Discount Tire. My buddy's wife got a low tire when she was in Albuquerque. Her husband told her to go to Discount Tire because they are known for their good reputation. Long story short, Discount tire couldn't repair the tire, nor did they have a replacement for her, so they put on a 'used tire' they had in the back. The entire cost was "FREE".

I'm not saying Discount Tire is perfect, but overall, the messaging from their headquarters is to strive for good customer service. Unfortunately, that doesn't always trickle down to the local level like it should.

Discount Tire in my area has a great reputation, but they quoted me $400 dollars to dismount a set of tires from rims and mount them on a new set of rims with with a road force balance.

IDK, seemed expensive. The associate was nice.

I was hoping i could pay someone, but looks like ill do it myself lol
Damn thats pricy. I had a set of 37s unmounted and remounted at local shop (Mavis tire)on new wheels for 100.00. came back a week later and had the full size spare done. They didnt even charge me just requested i give them a good review. I didnt even buy the tires there.

@Discount Tire
The $39.20 lifetime warranty certificate which "they sucked her into paying extra for" would have given you a free tire replacement instead of the $390.15 or $507.75 you need to pay now.

That's a good point. As soon as I bought my Gladiator Rubicon, I took it to Discount Tire to get a lifetime warranty and rotate/balance on the tires.

I've been doing business here in Johns Creek, GA with Discount Tire for over 20 years. I encouraged my son to do the same and he did, but he noticed changes that had escaped me. I see them now. The individual stores are under immense pressure to ramp up the sales to every customer that walks in the door by breaking down every transaction into its individual components and then increasing the price of each of the components. The "Certs" fee is now variable. In your case, it's clearly an example of taking advantage of the "damsel in distress" - a repugnant tactic. My son made the switch to Costco. So far, so good. By the way, mention Costco to the Discount Tire guys, and you can see the fear in their eyes.

I buy my tires from simple tire and take them to a local place for mounting/balancing. Prices are almost always better there than either Tirerack or Discount Tire. Exception was for my current Gladiator wheels where I got the wheels/tires from Extreme Terrain, mounted and balanced upon delivery. I installed them myself. No issues.

I have gone to DT for a rotation bcuz the local place wasnt able to do it fast enough and I didn't want to do it in winter.

Grand Cherokee? Depends on the gearbox. I wouldn't want a new tire on with 3 worn tires. Especially if the 3 worn ones are more than half gone. Warranty would be worthless.
