So does this rule apply to electric vehicles, like Rivians, as well?

They do not have a proper 4WD system, either. They do it with two or more electric motors.

I always wanted to drop the TRD blower onto the motor. Toyota did the frame recall but the stupid dealer locally didn't want to replace the frame, so they undercoated it without telling me first. Ruined my only chance at the recall. Had I known they were going to just spray it, I'd have told them not to. I'll never buy anything from a MileOne dealer again.
I bought mine from Newark Toyota. never had a problem with them until the frame issue. There excuse was they didn't have the facilities to put a new frame in. But the Tacco lasted till 2012. I was going to get another Taco when the 2012 Jeep Liberty's time to go. I didn't like the 4 banger turbo, glad didn't get a Thundra V-6 twin turbo, there blowing up left and right.

@Hunter#1 I'm almost positive the only indy Toyota dealer left in the Baltimore Metro is Bill Kidd's in Timonium. All the others are either MileOne/Heritage or another chain. MileOne is awful. I could tell you stories about their shitty salespeople at multiple stores and brands. The only ones worse are DARCARS. Jeep at least has a bunch of indy dealers mixed in with the small-large chains. Still hit or miss.

What’s work?
On that note SxS are a flaming mess. They rip up the roads driving too fast on tiny wheel and cause so much damage. I like them in theory but folks act like assholes.
Absolutely this. Back in Nam when SxS were essentially an ATV with a bench seat wasn’t an issue. It’s getting retarded now. I was at our local shop here and Polaris is up to 1500 now. As if 1 liter turbo engine wasn’t enough. My son and I ride ATVs a lot and we’ve had more near misses from assholes bombing through the desert than I care to count. Best part is most have the attitude your bothering them. They filet roads open, open new trails everywhere, chew roads up into bugdust, haul ass everywhere and when you think you’re far enough away not to run into one……you do and dudes doing 60. I fear eventually the BLM will just start shutting land down. Personally I am absolutely burnt out on SxS. It’s the same theme as the rest of this thread. Self centered, disrespectful attitudes, the “I’m me and I’ll do what I want and the whole world can kiss my ass” with liberal does of un-common sense approach to everything. For that attitude it’s no surprise restrictions happen and probably need to. It’s the stupid who always ruin it for everybody.

3 motors would theoretically give them a similar capability to a 4x4 with rear locker, but no front.
From what I gather the Rivians are quite capable off road out of the box. The Cybertruck and Hummer OTOH are no more than mall rated. BEVs with true off road capability are on the horizon but adoption will be a ways out.

But even so, the immense weight of the BEVs is concerning off road. Getting one unstuck could be a real challenge. Has MORR pulled one out yet?

Good question; I was just watching an episode where he pulled out a hybrid minivan, but not exactly a good comparison.

I have friends who work in rural CO fire departments and they are terrified of EVs. When they catch on fire, they burn hot and long and are difficult to suppress. There is growing fear they will cause wildfires. So, that could be another argument for limiting their access, I suppose.

Edit: found a video of him getting a Tesla car out but not the truck and no Rivians.

We took the back way in to Arches National Park back during April spring break this year. I forget the trail name, but its cool because kids wanted to see the dino tracks along the way. Right before the dino tracks we encounter, I kid you not..., a Honda minivan. Talking with them, the hotel staff in town told them they could go in that way. That's a big no and took them way too long into the trail to figure that out. It ain't a tough trail for 4x4 ,although I did scrape at the entrance on the big hump in a stock JT Rubicon with 33's. Definitely , not a flat dirt road for a minivan or similar vehicles.

I scraped in that same spot it's not friendly for low departure angles. I'm glad I sprung for the hitch skid.

I think Moab Motorsports recovered a GMC Denali or similar vehicle on low profile tires that rolled right near there.

Edit: Found it.

I think every JT needs a hitch skid. $109 well spent.

Island Beach State Park in NJ is permit only, but allows AWD and 4WD to get permits. Last 4th of July wife and I got out there and noticed an awful lot of non-permitted vehicle trying to drive on the sand after we realized the permit checker ranger station was un-occupied.

Ford Escape: stuck at the entrance. 2 WK/WK2 GCs: stuck at the entrance. A handful of pilots and highlanders and whatever elses: stuck at the entrance. Meanwhile every truck, JL, 4runner, etc we saw with permits was fine.

What did they all the people stuck have in common? 1. They were all AWD. 2. They all weren't permitted. 3 They all had curiously well inflated tires.

If i were to guess which was the most significant contributing factor i'd guess #3. I think it all comes down to preparation. There's something about AWD just being automatic that makes the false confidence that comes with it automatic though. Sure there were plenty of AWD vehicles on the beach not stuck, but i didn't see a single 4x4 that was stuck.
" 3 They all had curiously well inflated tires." You forgot 4. Stupid drivers without a clue.

Every off road place I’ve ever been where ATVs, motocross bikes or SxSs were operating was a totally destroyed, rutted out, wasteland, devoid or vegetation around the trails. I’m kind of amazed that any National Park would allow them. The places I’ve see were in cordoned off areas on private, state or Forest Service land. I’m not sure how the feds handle adventure bikes which I see as more like cousins to the overlanding crowd than the motorcross folks.

We used to have a mountain bike race series in my city. Part of it was on a through-the-woods motorcross race course on our huge municipal waterworks and parks property. One year during a particularly rainy city-sanctioned motorcross race, they destroyed the woods so badly, they ended up banning everyone from the area including mountain bikers who had nothing to do with the damage. In most years it would take 6-8 months for the terrain to recover. You can still see damage from this race 20 years later.

In our waterworks property you actually can still see earthen mounds and ridges from the Revolutionary war. These guys destroyed a lot of that and made their own mounds in a single afternoon that still exist 20 years later. It’s insane how much damage those types of vehicles do.

You’d think the weight of Jeeps and other 4x4s would make them more damaging, but it’s the speed and drifting an all that crap. Unfortunately, while not necessarily destroying the trails, what the large vehicle users bring is massive amounts of trash in the form of beer cans/bottles, shell casings, human waste, household garbage and dumping.

In my state, the NPS is hostile to ALL off roaders.

I am having flashbacks of doing the Medano Pass in a Trail Rated Compass. The whole time I was on that trail I was wishing I had my Gladiator and getting weird looks from people in real off-road vehicles, but I made it through. I can definitely see how someone with little to no experience would have not made it through in an AWD vehicle. I got lucky a few times.
