Think of it from a momentum point of view..

If your accelerating it is easier to pull, or grab on for dear life. If you are stopping it is easier to push or brace for impact?

Is there a tuner that remedies this?

From the dawn of creation, upshifting an automatic transmission was done by pushing the shifter towards the firewall in the natural motion that God intended. Conversely, downshifting was done in a pulling motion.

Anyone else having difficulty making the shift?

Always love your posts. Clever, a lot of common sense.

Don’t let those Mojave owners hear you say you don’t race a Jeep or this could get off the rails quickly

Totally agree, the shift pattern seems natural to me because riding modern motorcycles.

BTW about 30 years ago I owned pre 75s: Norton 1 up 3 down R side, then later a Triumph 1 down 3 up R side, at the same time as modern motorcycles; it was really confusing when switching to the Brit bikes with the shifters and brakes on different sides.
I still have my 74 Norton Roadster. The 73 Trident is gone. New regs went into effect about 1970 but the brits were given special dispensation because of, reportedly, low volume production. Even the hd sportster had a right side shift that worked on the flat trackers. The Nortons had the GP shift pattern, 1 up 3 down. It allowed slightly more clearance while heeled over and upshifting coming off the corners.

My niece's first car was ,if I recall, an Olds with reverse at the bottom of the selector range. PNDR on the column.

I don't care what anybody says. You are 100% correct. Whoever designed this at Jeep is dyslexic.
Push up to down shift, and down to up shift? What?

Even worse, on the steering wheel you push up to go numerically down in the menu, and down to go up?

What a bunch of morons....

4 speed. Was it a pistol grip?
you should see the shifter handle our priest has in his pickup. As I recall it's an African war club or something like that he cut off and used it as his shifter. I gotta get a picture of it sometime.
It was a wood sided, slanted forward, piece of chromed flat bar. It was a loooong time ago.

Omg five pages already of “It’s right, no it’s wrong”?
It is what it is, get used to it, if you can’t, you shouldn’t be driving.
My Volvo is side to side.
Such first world problems.

@ShadowsPapa the majority of your posts has me yearning for my old 340 Duster (hence the user name), and for the record, the shift pattern on that automatic…….

That was a fun one to drop down into first and hammer it. Ahhh the good old days when I was young and irresponsible.

Yeah almost every vehicle I’ve had was opposite of the Jeep. The only other vehicle I’ve driven that was like this was a 2020 range rover and i was super confused for a second. I personally don’t like it reversed like this.

Push up?
Down to upshift?
There’s the problem.
It’s push FORWARD and pull BACKWARD.?
