Per Jeep, up to 10k is considered normal.
7K is what most dealers are going to put on stickers
5k is really what I'd recommend
3k is what I do.

To be fair, he was not totally ignorant of what he was getting into.

Currently has ---18,600
That's 4,400 miles - oil life meter says 50% left.
That suggests the oil life if I continue under the same conditions that it will run out at about 8,800 miles.
I typically go about 5,000 (and rotate tires)

Dealers here tag 'em for 5,000 miles on the reminder sticker.

I used to do 3,000 on my legacy engines, old school stuff and old oil formulas, non-synthetic.
I do 1 year or 3500 on my Eagle's 4.0 - I figure the engine isn't quite as well controlled as modern engines so I won't run it as long although when the Eagle's original 258 was made, 7500 was the norm. I still did about 3,000-3,500 tops even back then.

You can't buy a house and not be aware of the HOA and rules, you know going in - or should!
The properties north east of us a half mile or so were sold with stipulations that the house had to be within 50 feet of the road and all kinds of other crap - some sort of thing that went along with the land sales - you want to buy one of these lots and build, these are the rules/stipulations.

That HOA would have fun with our Tuesday coffees - Gene has decided to see if the rest of the group wanted to share hosting - each week a different "regular attendee" host it at their shop.
That means, shop open, some not so quite and tame cars parked around and a bunch of 60-somthings and older sit around and talk about street rods, world peace, who made this coffee anyway..........
Oh, I can see the looks on those neighbors in an HOA environment where these guys drive whatever they happen to have out that day - tame modern pickup to a 1940s rod with less than mufflers, velocity stacks sticking up....and all converge on one place and talk shop.

As a new owner, I’m changing it at 500, 1000 and then 3000. After that roughly every 5k or when it starts turning black.
My dad always told me when I was younger after I bought my first car he would say “if your oil don’t look like honey, go spend some money and change your oil.”

Do you run any zinc supplements for your AMC? If not you should consider it… or a race oil that contains zinc

No, I don't run any additives at all, for multiple reasons, including -
the 1990s were the real problem when the EPA ruled zinc has to be reduced - there wasn't anything to make up for the ZDDP that was being used at that time. A lot of cams were lost - and that started the tale that you MUST have zinc.
Along came new formulations with chemistry that made up for the less zinc content (it's the phosphate rather than zinc itself)

University studies trying to figure out how ZDDP even worked to begin with, proved that after the protective layer reaches a certain point, it stops building. Their conclusion - more zinc doesn't do anything other than extend the miles you can put on oil and still have some zinc left. No biggy if you never take oil to the maximum mileage anyway

Other studies - university and oil companies both, found that too much actually causes changes in the metals in the engine and can damage or weaken them - more proof that more isn't better, but can actually be worse.

Many times additives don't play well with the original oil formulations and chemistry and can lead to a weakening of the oil's film strength or resistance to acids and so on - it's a "gamble" - adding might help, but the majority of the times, not. Changes need to be formulated to work together with a specific oil's chemistry - what you can add safely to one oil may not work in other oils.

So I've chosen to just pick a great oil to begin with and run with it.
I've never put any additives in any oil.
As far as I know, the young guy who bought my 70 is still driving it around and showing it down in Texas. I wonder how many miles he's put on it - Texas is a big place.

If anyone lives around the Lubbock, TX area and sees a mosport green Javelin SST with factory ram air, sidewinders (dealer optional side pipes) and AMC Rebel Machine wheels on it - let me know.

Just eclipsed 800 miles in a couple weeks of ownership. Planning on change at 1000 miles, then again at 5000 (along with tire rotation) and every 5k after (rinse and repeat).

Been following that rule for many years now (except for the couple diesels I've had, which have their own intervals) and seems to work well for the gas engine vehicles I have had.

I changed my oil today. The oil had about 6,000 miles on it and looked like it needed it. The oil monitor said I had 87% oil life remaining. Straight math says 0% would be at about 46,000 miles. I don't think it knows what it is talking about.

I have never seen a OLM that far off in these vehicles that was not reset.

Somebody must've driven your vehicle and accidentally reset the OLM. The longest mine (My JL) has gone is 8500 miles, mostly highway, at 5% left.
