It all boils down to how risk adverse someone is. Path of least resistance is to use a properly labeled spec'd oil and in the correct grade.
Recommendation and use of non-spec'd and out of grade oil and telling people there will be no problem if a warranty issue arises is fool hardy and most will not be standing next to them offering up their own money for that advice.
That being said, I follow my own preferences that differ from the OM call outs but I understand that risk and accept it.
