One person hard top removal

This is my Titan adjustable gantry crane 1/2 ton. I have a vevor 1100lb hoist attached. It's 8'3" at it's lowest height and goes to 11 feet tall. I use it outside it's on wheels and rolls around. It's how I got my full sized 37"x20 spare tire up top on my platform rack. I also have the titan push trolley. It's probably the most inexpensive Gantry available. I doubt you'd be able to build it much cheaper.

Take out all bolts and disconnect wiring harness. Open rear window. Climb in bed of truck, put one arm through rear window. Stand up and lift top. Walk to back of bed with top in hand. Set top down on bed rails then climb out. Lift top and set gently on ground.

It's a trick I learned with the CJ7, opening the rear hatch made it easier to get the top off AND changed the balance point. Knew it wouldn't affect the balance point on the JT, but getting a hand on the inside roof made it both easier to lift and balance the top.

My garage isn’t very tall and the top sits right under the garage door opener so not a lot of clearance when taking the top off. I mounted two pieces of unistrut and use four trolleys so that when the top comes off I can slide it back and raise it higher.

This, then I place on a pice of insulation mat, window side down, and it rests till September/October till ready to be put back on

I assume it’s secured with lag bolts. No clearance issues with the trollies?

Does a painted top weigh more than a black one? Not that the paint weighs anything, but it seems to be made of a different material.

I don't think they are actually made of a different material; I believe the standard black hard top simply has a texture applied (or uses a textured paint) before being painted black (which probably means less work is required to prep the part when it comes out of the mold). Presumably the color matched tops need to be prepped to be very smooth before priming and painting, as even small imperfections left from the mold could result in a visible defect with the glossy paint.

Quadratec lists the same shipping weight for replacement rear sections (56 lbs, note that this is just the shell without the rear window, hardware, seals, etc; and since it is shipping weight may be including whatever packaging it comes in) whether textured black or primed for body-color paint.

Make sure you put moving blankets over the sides of the bed just in case you have a slippage situation

Wondering what kind of solutions there are for someone to remove the hard top by themselves. My garage isn’t tall enough to use a hoist so that option is out. I have only ever owned soft top wranglers so hard tops are new to me.

I don’t even know it it’s possible to do.

I have a rack over the bed and still able to remove myself.

I was able to take off all the bolts etc then from the inside lift just enough for one or the other side ro clear the roll bar and place it on a moving mat. So you are going to slide it towards the drivers or pass side....

Once you clear the roll bar of the far side...get out...and pull it towards you...clear the other roll bar by going inside and lifting...

And yea....1000x easier then Wrangler

not sure if you're able to see that. But I just roll it back onto my tonneau cover with a protective blanket on it, then slide it to the side and grab it and set it down onto a $11 dolly cart from harbor freight with some foam taped to it.
