So I was backing out of a parking spot and the Jeep slams into park all of the sudden. I seriously thought I hit something. I look down to see that the door sensor was lit up saying my drivers side door was open. Pissed me off to put it nicely. This got me wondering...what if I was driving at a greater speed and the sensor goes off? Will it attempt to slam it in park while I’m going at a decent speed? Imagine if you were going 35 and it does it?
Looking back, I did notice the sound of the door shutting was “off” a little bit. I’m guessing it shut enough to pass the sensor until I started moving and it jarred loose. I would seriously hope that if the sensor came on while going fast, we would just get a typical chime and dash symbol.

Same situation happened to me in driveway (I was trying to get as close to the edge as possible to make room for my wife to pull in the garage so I tried opening the door to look at the driveway edge... BOOM PARK. Seems like a silly feature — not sure I have had another vehicle that does this.

I've experienced it just stopping when you open the door, not actually going into park, and the gear selector flashes. I've never had mine just slam into park, it's more like neutral.

I do know if the doors are off, and you disconnect your seatbelt, it will kill the throttle if you're already moving. Also, it won't let me put it in reverse, or drive if doors off, and seatbelt is unbuckled. It just flashes the gear selector light.

Not that I ever drive without doors, and seatbelt, it's trying to jump out/in while dealing with a trailer, or getting Jeep into position for unloading. Basically just trying to move the Jeep a few feet. Annoying, but I understand why they're doing that. Liability.

This is what it does for me too. I just used the word “park” lazily lol. Technically the gear selector flashes like you said. It definitely brought me to an abrupt halt though.

These will prevent it from happening. If your on a trail and don't want to have the seat belt on they come in handy

I’ve got the shortest seatbelt extenders. Basically a buckle plugged into the buckle. Allows me to use the belt or not. Makes the chime and auto park things of the past. Like $20 for a pair on amazon. The ones from my 17 Suburban fit my new JT. Gotta love cross manufacturer comparability!

I have never had it happen from the door being open but it does it to me all the time when I lift off the seat while trying to look over my shoulder while reversing. It drives me absolutely into a fit of rage.

I know that there is a set speed like 2.5MPH where it will lot shift to park. I just don't remember what that set speed is.

That’s what I was wondering. Would be pretty scary if it locked up at speed

I drive mine with the doors off and no seatbelt all the time. I have never had an issue. I wonder if its added into one of the extra safety options that I don't have? I chose zero extra safety options or tech options.

Pretty sure I’ve driven, at least for a short time, with no doors or seatbelt. Usually just chimes at me if I remember right.

I think it is a safety feature Jeep has implemented to prevent a future reoccurrence of this. It activates the brakes while placing the transmission in neutral. I have tested this on my jt plenty of times. It has to be running in a drive gear R N D if you open your door and have the seat unbuckled it will activate.

Yeah I can't be 100% sure because I always wear my belt when driving, but I did move the truck out of the driveway last week with no doors and no seat belt. The dash said something like "vehicle not in park" in red but I was able to reverse (slowly) and come to a stop.

Happened to me when i was backing down a boat ramp. I opened the door to look to make sure I was not hitting the ramp curb.. It went right into park and I was stuck halfway down the ramp.

Sometimes I have a real need to back up with the door open.

Is there any way to shut this off?
