Happened to me when i was backing down a boat ramp. I opened the door to look to make sure I was not hitting the ramp curb.. It went right into park and I was stuck halfway down the ramp.

Sometimes I have a real need to back up with the door open.

Is there any way to shut this off?
Just be driving at over 2MPH before opening the door.

I’ve got the shortest seatbelt extenders. Basically a buckle plugged into the buckle. Allows me to use the belt or not. Makes the chime and auto park things of the past. Like $20 for a pair on amazon. The ones from my 17 Suburban fit my new JT. Gotta love cross manufacturer comparability!
I just did the turn the ignition on and off three times trick and it turned the seat belt warning and chimes off.

I think it is a safety feature Jeep has implemented to prevent a future reoccurrence of this. It activates the brakes while placing the transmission in neutral. I have tested this on my jt plenty of times. It has to be running in a drive gear R N D if you open your door and have the seat unbuckled it will activate.
I bet your right but that was one of those silly stalk shifters where you toggle forward or backwards, i.e. not a gated shifter.

You'd be surprised how many people hop out of a vehicle THINKING they have moved it all the way to park....... it happens. Yes, that was one of the old-style shifters that no one liked anyway (one of the things I complained about with our prior GC) but people still think it's in neutral or park, don't pay attention or bother LOOKING and simply open door and hop out. Oh, I'll just pull up here and drop this in the mail box........ vehicle continues down the road - no driver.
A friend had his vehicle totaled because of an idiot at a body shop not getting it in park and simply exiting the vehicle.

Hate it until your kid gets killed, I guess.

This never hold water with me. Sure it sounds sincere but you could say that about almost everything.

A tricycle should not actually move when a kid peddles it. Kid's can get to close to a hill and roll's down into the shark tank you neighbor has.

Tell that to the Star Trek actor who was literally crushed by his GC unless that one has a silly stalk shifter too?

Now you are really reaching. Wow. If you think that way then your truck should never move, period. You could kill someone with it.
And if your neighbor has a shark tank that's an issue for the neighbor and the law.

This is an issue that has existed for years.
I know of three cases just personally where a vehicle not being in park caused or nearly caused damage or worse - then there's the example given in this thread in addition.
You know you'd sue if any member of your family got hurt.
I know of a car that was on a 4 post lift and nearly went off the end because it wasn't actually fully in park, engine running, I know of a teacher who got his foot run over, and the car I mentioned that was totaled when the guy working for the body shop didn't get it in park and got out.

Basically, for FCA to make such changes means that more than one person was hurt or worse. They don't do such things over a single instance. If they did, we'd see recalls and changes by the dozens with each model year and recalls and changes in between beyond the normal they screwed up sort of thing.

That's what I was talking about, I mean I quoted your post about it and said you were right. Those shifters are dumb and apparently deadly no idea why you got your panties in a wad.

Remember the old 70'ish Ford trucks? The automatic shifter would break and it wouldn't go into park? Some people were hurt there too.
These new all electric shifter's started another string of injuries because the switch did not put trans into park. A guy I worked with had his RAM 1500 4X4 hooked up to his bass boat. You guessed it. He backed into the water...put it in park(He thought)......opened door, got out, door knocked him down, truck/trailer/boat all floated away until the truck finally sank. That's why we now have these safety measures.

4LO disables AutoPark as well, but I’d avoid it on concrete—especially if you have to maneuver much at all to get clear of the ramp.
