No reason not to as long as you use a cut-off of some sort - a manual switch, a solenoid, or some other means and don't have full battery power out to the bumper.

As far as fuses - that's optional as long as you have said cutoff and have wiring that can support the draw that may come from a winch.
People have used winches for years with no fuse.
Not implying or suggesting it's not a good idea - it actually is a good idea, but if the wiring is large enough to handle whatever the battery may kick out, AND you have a switch to cut power to the winch when it's not in use...... it's not a must.

That's even more than the Warn info I ran into....... that's awfully close to the 500 amp fuse limit, IMO.

OK, the poster who revived this thread says:
he has the BADLANDS (I assume he's go the APEX) 1200.
The Badlands (if Apex) 1200 has these specs for draw -

So if the line is run out and the pull is a full pull at 12000 pounds, his winch should draw 448 amps.

yes... I wonder what the amp draw is when you go over the 12K limit ? Is it even possible to go over 12K pounds on a recovery like that ?

I always install a post/stud with a wing nut. When the winch is in use I loosen the wing nut and put the winch + cable on the battery post. When im done with the winch I disconnect it.

Chances are if I am winching on the trail my hood is open anyways.

I never ever drive with a connected winch.

Yeah, there's a couple really really long discussions on making sure the front end isn't hot in case of accident. And then when someone posts a vehicle fire, it gets talked about again.
Switches, solenoids, disconnects, whatever.
Basically, don't leave a 6 gauge or better wire from the battery to the front bumper hot while driving.

I've been using a manual disconnect but there's times getting the hood open and to it - sometimes it's really slippery or not so easy, so my next version will be switched electrically like show in the pics in the other posts.

Yep, that's me, and it's the HF-sold BADLANDS APEX 12000. I guess it's possible that it tried to pull over 12000lb (6000lb vehicle+suction) but I don't know enough about the maths to calculate that.

I'm not THAT mean to make you work on that math problem.
Mud sucks. You'd have to know how much mud sucks to do it anyway.
I don't know if PA mud sucks more than IA mud or not.
