i find the unpainted fenders useful. The fronts are pretty flat on top and can be used to set stuff on when you're working under the hood, and i guess other times too. I wouldn't put tools on painted fenders.
Also, if you're going to be doing any brush trails or frankly just treated your jeep like a jeep, less paint to f up is always handy.
Some colors look great with unpainted flares and roof... others look much better with painted everything. Pick your base color accordingly.
The unpainted roof and fenders break up some colors. My 20 was red with unpainted roof and fenders. My current is all red. I sometimes think the black broke things up a little better.
I agree with the two above posters...I have a white Mojave and really like the black top and fenders to break up the color. Maybe if I had one of the fancy colors I'd feel diferent. I also like the utilitarian usefulness of just being able to use them like a shelf. One day I imagine I'll LineX them and then be really happy.
Black doesn’t show trail pin strips as easily and can be cleaned up with fender black stuff. Painted fenders…well you are stuck with the pin stripping unless you want to pay a painter.
my jeeps goes through brush, so always opted for unpainted…
I've got painted and it kind of looks more like a Mercedes than a Jeep.
Due to that, I call it my G-Wagon.
I was also told it "looks like something BlackRock mercenaries would roll up in". (I think they meant Blackwater)
Painted looks more like the old ones with metal fenders and single stage paint all over. The black plastic stuff looks like the modern Subarus with all the "rock protection". As for brush pinstriping, most of it buffs out unless it a really deep scratch, which will look like crap on the plastic ones too.
The one thing that drove me nuts with my JKU was that the "black" top and fenders were gray in two years. I tried all the standard "remedies," but none lasted. I finally ditched the fenders for flat steel fenders with a strong powder coat on them. The top was a lost cause.
When I went looking for my gladiator, painted fenders and top were a must for me. I won't make the same mistake twice. Of course, the Gloss Black body with paint matched doesn't look half as bad as other colors with paint matched.
Black is easier to get replacements less money for repairs.
I had painted max tow fenders when i bought mine but swapped them out for unpainted Rubicon flares. I bought them as take offs cheap and swapped them.
My parents have a JL and when they hit a deer to replace a front fender, it took months between ordering and body shop color matching it. I would cringe thinking of trying to do that with roof or freedom panel replacement
Yea, i can see it breaking up all that colour.
Plus the benefit of not having to do touch ups for chips is a bonus. I looked at two used, a white one that had painted fenders and there was one chip about the size of a quarter on a back one. Then a sting gray one with non painted and it had a bunch of dings and damage like someone fired bb’s at it. I passed on both trucks.
The one thing I can't stand about my Gladiator is my flares are paint matched but the top is factor textured black. Drives me nuts that this was even an option from Jeep, to have mismatched finished parts. Just my opinion, but 100% painted flares and top. It looks so much cleaner and sharper, no matter what color. The black flares look like cheap replacement parts. Having everything painted is so much more photogenic as well. If you're really worried about pin striping you can always add PPF. Another one to consider: if you order the painted parts, it's too easy to find black flares on Facebook for sale. But you'll almost never see painted parts being sold.
I ordered my Hydro Blue Mojave in the exact configuration that Dos704 can't stand. LOL I wanted the black top because I like the break up of color and I thought I might run the cloth half top from Best Top which is black and I di NOT want a blue rear portion of the roof and a black front portion. I think that looks really bad. Fast forward, never bought the sunrider cloth top so that is not an issue, but I do prefer the gloss black top to all blue from a color break up/detailing look, lack of concern for more painted pieces getting damaged when being removed and on the trails. BUT I did NOT want the black unpainted fenders, they look bad really fast (fade) in my mind and the painted fenders have just enough black trim on them to break up all the blue. I feel the painted fenders give the Jeep a more polished, clean, finished, refined look.
There you have it, lot's of various opinions.
Good Luck!!!
