I'm considering purchasing a 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. After the test drive I was listening under the vehicle and heard this ticking sound and was wondering if anybody with more experience than me would attribute this to the pentastar tick that I've read so much about. Any opinions about the sounds? They appear to be coming from the top of the engine compartment even though I'm recording from underneath. Mechanic at Christen Brothers says it is not the lifter tick/rocker arm issue, but I'd still like additional opinions. Thank you for anything you can contribute. Herenis the youtube link to the video. Hope you all can hear it. Youtube link

Sounds normal to me but maybe hearing it in person sounds different?

Post your video on something like Youtube and share the link so folks can more easily assist you. Could be something as simple as fuel injectors doing normal fuel injector things.
This. I can’t get it to play either, but fuel injectors are indeed noisy. A 2020 was FCA built and pre Covid parts issues and the 3.6ls hold up a lot better, but any engine has failures. Wish we could hear it to judge.

Video ideally needs to be from the top, it's harder to hear what the top of the engine is doing, from the bottom of the engine.

To me, there is something clanking beyond injector tick. I agree though, taking audio from the bottom is not the best if trying to determine valvetrain tick.

It’s hard to tell on audio though. I have had some good running classic cars that sound like they have an engine knock, exhaust leak, loud valve train, etc on video and sound great in real life.

Now I’m curious. If I had my Jeep with me, I’d start it up and take video to see if it sounds bad on video I bet that at least the fuel injectors are loud on video and it’s a very quiet running engine in person at idle

Yeah, I am not married to the opinion of it being the tick, just sounds off though.

2020 was not exactly a stellar year for our Pentastars in the Gladiator. There was some pretty colossal misfire threads those first couple of years.

That’s true but they don’t seem t mo have the tick issues that the newer ones have. The pen tastes isn’t a bad engine design. There are lots out there with 200k+ on them. I think it’s a combo of seeing issues on forums, like always, and the later ones having more subpar quality parts and maybe some bad Stellantis quality control.

It does seem like phone microphones do some odd things to the audio on vehicles. Exhaust notes never get captured accurately. Although, and this is assuming the phone isn't just inventing noises, I think I have to agree with @Hootbro on this one. Injectors alone aren't making all those noises.

Not enough information, like miles, price? If anything more than 50,000 miles an $25,000? You can buy a new one for around $35,000, with better financing and the same payment for longer term. Good luck!
