Yeah I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on some 33x12.50 17. Anyone have any tire recommendations on a tire this size? Want something aggressive that still rides nice (if possible). And of course the lighter the better.

I’m getting an Overland and pondering 295/70/18s, which are essentially a 34 inch tire. Hoping that isn’t too aggressive for the stock 3.73 gearing.
It’s not. That’s exactly what I run on my overland and they are right in the Goldilocks zone. Still has plenty of passing power ( flash the computer to the right tire size if you have an auto, makes a huge difference), still gets me 18-19 MPG mixed driving, and perform great off-road.

For OP:
Everyones experience will be different because everyone’s expectations are different. Are you at high elevation? Are you coming from a full size pick up with a 350hp/400ftlbs V8? Those guys tend to think you need waaaay deeper gears than I would ever consider “needed” for a 35” tire coming from the Midwest, and never owning anything over 305hp.

But there is something to be said about wishing you had gone bigger, you see a lot of guys say they wish they went bigger.

Boostnu, is yours a gasser? And what difference do you notice from going to 315/70? Any issues with shifting etc? Do you still hit 8th gear? I've already eliminated going with the 35's, I know the 315/70 are close but I seem to see a ton of people with this tire size with 3:73 gears.
Yep mine is gas with 3.73s. It does still hit 8th gear on flat highways not so much on back roads with the hills and stuff which I expected. Haven’t really noticed any problems with shifting or searching for gears. I’ve really been kicking around regearing and going to 37 or 38s but trying to be content with what I have for now and spend money in other places.

I went with general grabber a/tx they are a aggressive looking all terrain that still rides very good. One of the best things you can do is start looking at all the different tires on a site like discount tire. Pick out ones that you like then start comparing weights.

Anyone have any issues with 35's and the 4.10 gears that come in a Rubicon?
Running BFG 315/70/17 which I think come in about 34". Not heavy at 63lbs. tazered and drives as it did on the original 32" tyres.

Yeah but the Ruby doesn't run 3:73 gears, that's a great tire!

I run the same, after running Rubi takeoffs on my overland for 1000ish miles. 315/70 K02 weighs a pound less, and I haven’t noticed much of a difference in daily drivability. I wasn’t hitting eighth going up to the mountains on the stock duelers or the falkens anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have a Mojave came with 33’s and I switched to 35’s and my gas mileage tanked so for me I’ll go back to 33 when these wear out

Another thing that will help, especially with 3.73 gears, is lighter tires. The 255-80-17 I chose are 10 lb lighter than the equivalent in Rubi size, which is also .3" shorter design height than the 255s.

Yeah, the Falkens are very heavy.

You'll regret not getting 35's. I got the Ridge Grappler with 3.73 gears. I lost 2 MPG's and no problems keeping 8th gear on flat ground. If you have alot of hills or if you tow alot then re-gear or stay with factory tires. The difference in weight between 33's and 35's is not that big.

comparing apples to apples, meaning different sizes of Falken AT3W:
255-80-17E, 33.1" 52.5 lb
285-70-17C, 32.8" 62.8 lb
315-70-17E, 34.6", 72.8 lb
35x12.50-17E, 34.8", 75.4 lb
all except the Rubicon size are E rated. Other brands may be lighter/flimsier, but I have had excellent results with AT3W on rocky trails, sagebrush covered desert, etc. Here, going from 33.1 to 34.6" entails getting a 20.3 lb heavier tire.

33s for sure, that's what I'm on and would not want to go with 35s. I'd consider one of the in between 34-ish sizes at most.

So I have a Sport, 1.5 Tereflex front level. New 17x9 wheels. 4.53 backset. -12mm offset. Want to buy tires this week and read a lot of different things. Are 35x12.5 17 pushing it with the 3:73 gears etc? Looking for best option so I'm torn between 315/70/17. 33x12.5 17. 35x12.5 17. Looking for the experience of others to help with this so I don't regret my pick. Appreciate anyone's opinion!
Personally, I would definitely go with 35’s over 33’s. If needed for your use, you can re-gear to 4:10.
