Power Steering Fluid Level

I took my 2020 Gladiator with 35,000 miles on it to my local garage to get the oil changed; usually do it at the dealership, but was lazy this time.

Anyway, the dude behind the counter called and said they found some stuff and needed to talk with me about it. It is on our way home, so we stopped in and he proceeded to show me the level in the reservoir. It was definitely low and I would say almost "out".

He said that they didn't find any leaks and then proceeded to tell me that he has seen it before in a Chrysler Caravan and another Jeep, albeit not a Gladiator/Wrangler. He said that the factory is probably not filling the reservoirs up enough before the leave to the dealership.

I know this is complete nonsense and I will be taking it to the dealership to find out what is REALLY going on, but I haven't been able to find anything on this in the forums nor an internet search.

Anyone run into this?

I haven't had that problem but what he said makes sense. The fluid is expensive. If Jeep can short everyone by a few ounces, that adds up to real money. Or, if it is not on purpose, they may not be doing a very good job of bleeding the system and eventually the air works its way out and the level goes down.

Top it off and check it a few times over the week, unless you like having a junior mechanic at the dealer mucking about under the hood trying to find what is probably a non-existent problem while you waste your time in the waiting room.

I checked my 2021 at the 4 year point (2025) and it was very low as well. The pump was wining a lot when turning, so I checked it. The wine is gone now. The fluid is very expensive and specific to electric assist pumps. Don't use regular type of fluid!

bought my jtr in 2019 and was shorted on p/s fluid, dif fluid and transfer case. These fluids were supposed to be checked during the prep stage at the dealer, which is figured into your sale price. Not being done obviously.

Found mine short also. Dealer must have seen it in dealer oil changes, but they did not add or note on repair ticket.
I found it, went to buy fluid, but parts department said, let me get some from service, I assume because of cost vs amount needed. Service actually had none available (!?). Parts had none in stock and suggested parts store and how to ID the proper substitute, which while not cheap, was considerably less.

Use the Mopar fluid. Use the wrong stuff, and you just got bigger issues.

Yeah, I totally understand that. I just wondered if there was an alternative that met the Mopar specs. I’ll try to pick some up next time I’m near a dealer. Closest one is 25 miles away, out of my normal travel area.

I’d say it wasn’t burped right to begin with. I experienced air lock in my “several” ps pumps in my 21. I’ve mentioned it a few times a while back.

Dont just use Mopar fluid! It has to be special fluid for electric assisted systems - Amazon for $29!

Yes, the correct MOPAR part is 68088485AB ELECTRIC STEERING PUMP FLUID.

Either one of two material standards, MS-11655 or MS.90030, may appear on the label.

Material standard number MS-11655 is on the bottle sold by a Jeep dealer, found in the MOPAR Chemical Catalog (2024), and commonly referenced by aftermarket brands.

On a bottle sold by Amazon ($29.91), it is MS.90030. This material standard number is not listed in the Chemical Catalog.

The price from a Jeep parts advisor can be lower ($23.68, see attachment below), especially if you provide your customer number.

I don't know why the material standard number is different.
