I really dislike the silver ring on my wheels. I see zero need to take it to a shop to repaint them all. I want to black out the chrome part of the rims.

is there a reliably solid paint that I can apply? Paint pen perhaps? (Yes I know I’d need several pens.).
mid assume enamel based would work.
any suggestions? Anyone ever done this? I searched and mostly found complete paint jobs or powder coats.

I have used dupli color wheel paint on wheels previously.

You can get it at advance auto and other places. Remove the wheels, tape off what you need to paint, and put a couple coats on it. They make clear coat you can put on top if needed/desired. It won't be perfect, you will have to re-paint occasionally, but it will help you sleep at night and save some money and time :)

You obviously need to clean the wheels, then scuff the areas you want to paint.
Probably has a clear coat over the bare metal to keep it from oxidizing.

Yep, was going to scuff with 1000 then wipe with alcohol.

Use a scotch brite pad instead. 1000 grit won’t leave enough scratches for the paint to bite into. Mask everything off that you don’t want painted and use a quality clear on it. Just be aware that some wheel cleaner products will be too harsh for the paint and they can strip the clear right off. Ask me how I know 🙄

I'd at least check with a shop to see what they'd charge.

Maybe they give you a price that's not worth messing with it yourself.

Wouldn't it be easier to just pick out some wheels you like better, and then sell those?

You tried muratic acid didn’t you ? lol
I never use anything but soap and water.
I was planning to test a small section and see how it holds up over a month and then go for it. If it doesn’t hold up I’d just take it to a shop.

Raptor liner all day baby. I've done trim rings on my wheels, multiple skid plates, and my tube doors.. and a few other things. It's expensive as heck but it's urethane based and it's rock solid.

I like the factory wheels, I dislike the chrome trim on them.

It’s not chrome. It’s polished aluminum.

Furthermore, it’s coated polished aluminum. To get decent adhesion you would need to seriously scuff those areas. Then, if you got it to stick, you’d have an odd little different shade of black trim on your wheels.

Unless you want that look (and spending tons of time fixing paint chips) you would need to powder coat the whole wheel. Or just find someone to trade you a set of all-black wheels.
